Ask SFist: Loud Boom in the Upper Haight?

eightballsfisthaight.jpg

Reader Michael wrote to SFist this morning to ask:

There was a loud BOOM in the upper Haight last night around 9:30, and this morning Haight was closed between Masonic and Ashbury. There was a large plume of what looked like steam rising from the street, which had been fenced off w/ flood lights shining into the cordoned-off area. Any news?

What on Earth happened, Haight Street denizens?

The boom was a transformer explosion, because whenever you hear a boom and then there's no news about it, it's ALWAYS a transfomer explosion.

The street closure is for a "film" shoot for Lucky Goldstar (LG). They are using "theatrical" fog or something. Like dry ice.

It's a commercial shoot for LG. The loud boom you heard was an actor attempting use one of the awesome phones we don't get in the US on our third-world cellular network.

Transformers exploding outside my door!! To quote Shaia: "No,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no.......".

I live in SoPa (which is superior to NoPa), not more than three blocks from Masonic and I didn't hear any boom or see any movie being filmed. This is what we call a collective delusion. You all is crazy.

The boom was last night (actually there were two about an hour apart). It sounded to me (100 Block of Scott) like they were coming from the direction of Alamo Square. The filming is being done this morning since at least 8:00AM on Haight between Masonic and Ashbury, they are re-routing buses and the like.

There were at least three big booms over Alamo Square last night. Looked out my window and saw a big cloud of smoke in the air after one of them.

That's why you won't be getting paid. I'm still getting residuals from the one episode of Quincy I did back in 1979 (I was the second stiff to the left).

I heard it up in Pac Hts as well. It was only one boom, but a damn loud one.

Earlier this week there was a letter taped to my door (Masonic & Waller) about the filming thing.

i saw a flash of light with the boom. i was at a friend's apartment at steiner/ofarrell and the window was facing raymond kimbell playground.

Captain Kirk in the Klingon warship entering the earth's atmosphere in search of humpack whales.

Bruce Bergmann let a huge one go after holding it in all night

In Hayes Valley I heard 3 separate booms, 6pm to 9pm-ish.

I heard the boom, and I live at the other end of Haight Street (closer to Civic Center). My dog hates booms so he went and hid in the closet.

I heard it. I thought my upstairs neighbor's meth lab exploded.

We were at the corner of Pierce and Golden Gate at 6pm last night and heard the boom. I saw a puff of smoke in the air over Golden Gate down towards Steiner. I just figured it was kids + fireworks. Transformers explode underground.

Our block of Golden Gate did lose power on Wednesday night though - intermittently from about 8pm onward.

Yep, I heard several booms myself in the inner richmond. It sounded like professional mortar round fireworks quite far away. I just figured/hoped it was either the ballpark or someone messin around. But then there was only the one boom, then another quite awhile later. That's a bit unusual but, eh, what ya gonna do?

I heard all three in Alamo Square as well and saw the flashes and smoke. The hell?

I heard/felt three large booms in the J-town area last night, but they sounded like they were coming from Pac Heights?

Wherever they were, my building shook.

i live one block off alamo square. 3 booms. i was home for two which made the house shake, and the other i heard while outside and it was definitely from around alamo square.

I was in HV last night and saw/heard all three explosions. They were definitely not anywhere near GGP; the flashes of light were much further north (it looked like it was around the Western Addition). Regardless, the dog upstairs and our cat were pretty pissed off.

We live in the Upper Haight -- we heard the three booms last night, too. I assumed that it was some Prop 8 protest or Obama celebrations getting crazy in the streets.

So it is really great that you all heard booms, but does anbyody know WTF it was?

If not transformer explosions, It was probably fireworks. After Obama won, people were setting fireworks off in Noe Valley even...And ghetto kids like to set off fireworks anyways, even when there's not anything to celebrate.

i hear lots of bums yelling, the sound of someone peeing on my building, and some drunk douchebags heading back to the dorms from hobson's, but nary a boom.

It was just me, yelling "Boom!"

Nothing to report from Ocean Beach...

How far is SoPa from DMV Terrace?
