October 30. OK, well; October 30, 1988. At least according to the movie Donnie Darko.
Which means it's the last chance to warn you with this picture via punditkitchen.com.
And that movie? It's confounding, off-kilter, and oddly visceral. It humbly plays for all the stakes and will certainly stay with you after you've watched it.
And if you are watching it for the first time, don't read anything online about the movie before you see it. Just soak it in. Much like the music of Sigur Ros or the TV show Lost or the art of Mark Ryden, Donnie Darko is a delicious puzzle.
See if you can catch it before this world ends.
The trailer for the movie's original cut lurks behind the jump.

In my top five of all time. The Director's cut is a bit clearer, though. If you see it for the first time, and don't know WTF just happened (and you won't), start here:

Then, go to the film website, which is an eerie online sequel of sorts.

Finally, the book they keep refering to is "published" here:

Kelley did all this as a compendium to the movie and let it get out on the internets. After you read all this, see it again. Makes a lot more sense.
What, I can obsess over things other than politics...
Donnie Darko has been my latest fave for quite some time, which has been recently rivaled by Son of Rambow (also set in the '80s with a great soundtrack but not as great as DD's). Luckily, Drew Barrymore's wooden performance ("cellar door") didn't ruin Donnie Darko too much, but geez, she sucked.
Thanks for all the links, DL! Will check them out.
All I know is my friends and I are going as Sparkle Motion for Halloween. (Okay, I'm lying, but I hope someone is committed enough to make that happen).
Tabby, sometimes I doubt your commitment to sparkle motion.
{thanks for the set up you provided}

Oh. My. God. Sparkle Motion for Halloween is GENIUS! I wish I had thought of that!
Seriously, anyone who hasn't seen this movie needs to. Everything about it is amazing. Even aficionados of Jake G backlash have to admit that this movie is fantastic.
samantha darko: what's a fuckass?
@ David Latterman
Hell yes! And thanks for the excellent links.
@ Leanne
Ayep, definitely.
Well, she was there to produce, not act -- bless her heart. At least she gets credit for that in my book.
@ tabby
Please let it be so!
@ dolemite43
Hah! Knew it was coming and it was still lulzy.
Slightly terrifying sidebar: in rewatching that clip, I notice how much the crazed Kitty's hair looks like Sarah Palin's hair.
Did you know the Start Search dance scene wasn't filmed to Notorious? They did it to a T4F or INXS song (damn I forget which one), but couldn't get the rights. It so happened Notorious fit the beat exactly. They lucked out.
Also, apparently a sequel is being filmed now, about Samantha Darko, but Kelley isn't involved. This displeases me.
I've often judged the actions of the Board of Supervisors on the Love-Hate continuum. Guess where most of them fall?
This movie doesn't seem like a puzzle to me. Sometimes a disjointed mess is just a disjointed mess. The "puzzle" is just a convenient excuse for a poorly made movie.
@David Latterman: Love and FEAR. Hang your head in shame.
Yeah, I caught as soon as I wrote that. Hoping no one would notice.
I should go up to the blackboard now for my own exercise.
@ David Latterman
I did not know that. That's nifty.
@ David Latterman
I can't see anything positive coming out of this sequel at all in any way, shape, or form. [sigh]
Also if you would like to see what a McCain/Palin administration would be like be sure to watch Richard Kelley's most recent movie Southland Tales. Its a little cheesy (the Rock) but parts of it are good.
@Chris
You know full well we're both going to go see it, though.
@ David Latterman & pantsgolem
Probably closest to "no duh"...?
I'm not kidding anyone -- SF politics is straight-up Fear and lowest common denominator-ing. Embarassing. But then, that's everywhere. But SF isn't everywhere.
@ DL
I fear that you're right. Expectations are gonna be uuuuuber-low. I won't/don't-wanna spend money on it.
