Mansbach's depiction of Cap Anson as a vicious racist who's mission in life was to keep black players out of baseball, is way over the top, and an extreme exaggeration of the facts. It’s not to say that Anson did not have a role to play in this episode of history, but his role had more to do with following the rules laid down by the owners & American culture as a whole, then any extreme flaws in his character. With a little fact checking ... Cap Anson could be found later in life, after retirement, playing semipro ball with black players on a regular basis, including the founder of the Negro Leagues, Rube Foster.
