Scores of Hollywood folk came to Davies Symphony Hall last night to remember Paul Newman, who passed away recently, by performing a staged reading of "The World of Nick Adams," an adaptation by A. E. Hotchner of some of Ernest Hemingway's early autobiographical stories.
The benefit also honored The Painted Turtle -- or as Gavin Newsom called it, "The Purple Turtle," which sounds just as fun! -- a camp and family care center for children with life-threatening illnesses.
Also, rumor has it Fred Phelps and his hateful clan were out in front of Davies protesting the life of Paul Newman to make some sort of inane and insane point. But we'll chalk up their protest as yet another reason to love Newman.

What's the connection between Paul Newman and gays? Obviously, Phelps doesn't need much of a connection if he protests at Iraq War soldiers' funerals, but I'm curious.

You know full well that nobody had a CLUE who Paul Newman was until he played a drunken fag in Tennessee Williams' Cat On A Hot Tin Roof with the WHORE Elizabeth Taylor, then his acting career took off (as they say). You know full well that Joanne Woodard was NOT HIS WIFE.
More importantly, you know that he sold his never-dying soul for a little bit of human praise.

BTW, I was waiting for friends in front and in lobby of Davies for 45 minutes and I saw ONE Phelpsian the entire time although with several signs. The ones I could make out were: God Hates Fags, Paul Newman Burns in Hell, and God Hates Finland. (As to the last ... well, DUH!)
Per the website, God also hates the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team, Baltimore, and Desert Mountain High School and really, really hates Mexico -- but on a different day of the week. Lest we feel sorry for our neighbor-to-the-south, Phelps reminds us: "However, just because they speak a different language does not excuse them from their duty to serve and obey the SAME GOD and the SAME HOLY BIBLE that we here at Westboro Baptist Church do."
An amazing humanitarian like Newman is now the object of Phelps' ire? WTF??Newman did more for his fellow man in a month than Phelps has ever done. Oh well, if I were Newman's family I'd take it as compliment.
Wish I had known about this. I always miss the fun stuff. Paul was the last of classy Hollywood.

You are absolutely correct. That's the quote. But... the deal is/was (apparently) that he cheated on his FIRST wife (Jackie Witte) for years before having the affair with Joanne Woodward. He got caught in that one, the divorce went down, and he married his new lady.
THEN, he became faithful.

Last year I met Shirley Phelps-Roper and she is INSANE (duh). I suggest everyone watch Louis Theroux's BBC documentary on the Phelps clan called The Most Hated Family in America.
