Muni Drivers Hold Important Conference

Would you look at that! Four Munis, all bunched up and meeting together. Another job well done, Muni! Your drivers are the most punctual in the nation!

The N-Judah drivers held a conference at the Church portal this morning, trains stacked up back into Cole Valley, while more N's were being squeezed out the portal the other direction.

And if you zoom out, those four are probably the only ones on the line.

yea yea 43 pride from the xlcr to pac heights!

it's a long twisty road up and down

Yeah, not to nitpick or to ever be a MUNI apologist but it's really two buses bunched up going one way and two bunched up going the other way. Also nothing tops the BS that goes with riding the T past CalTrain down Third st. every day. I am absolutely convinced that MUNI supervisors have a hidden agenda in slowing that train down and the drivers have backed up that belief.

The N had a failwhale day. Pictures because it happened at www.njudahchronicles.com .

OMG buses bunch, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why. All it takes is one to get extra full, hit a traffic jam, pick up a disabled rider, and then the inevitable bunching will occur. Basically it is like this, when a bus is late (most often for one of the above mentioned reasons), there will be more people at each stop, which takes longer to make the stop than normal, which makes the bus slower. Due to the fact that the front bus is late, it is picking up rider that would normally go on the later bus, which makes it extra full (and thus extra slow to load), and makes the later bus extra empty, and extra quick to load. Making that bus likely early and increasing the chances that the next two buses will bunch up.

What can Muni do? They could create incentives for on time arrival, but that would have consequences, such as blowing by stops, refusing to pick up disabled or elderly riders, etc. They could tell the rear (and faster) bus to slow down (I hear MUNI does this), but that pisses off the people who are on that bus and really want to get to their destination as quickly as possible. They could inject another bus into the middle of the route, but that takes MONEY, and drivers that know all the routes to be able to jump in at a moments notice.

Or you could understand that buses will naturally bunch, and they do all over the world.

This is why people need to stop bitching about buses not following a schedule. Most of the lines in SF run frequently enough through dense enough traffic that they can't possibly stick to a schedule. The second bus in the bunch needs to stop and wait for 10 minutes (or whatever) instead of running an entire lap empty and making everyone wait extra long for the next one.

The other industrialized nations of this planet run bus systems that aren't a complete embarrassment.

MUNI is retarded.

Most of the lines in SF run frequently enough

No, they don't.

ha ha. saw the headline in my google reader and expect laffs, but not these many rofls! lololol.

I always figured that they were scared of getting assaulted or mugged. I was told they needed 4 people so they could play poker or mahjong!
