Today's Protest II: Cynthia Sheehan Needs More Attention

Local sane woman Cynthia Sheehan, according to AP, spearheaded a protest at noon today "at the San Francisco Chronicle for the paper's alleged failure to cover her candidacy for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's congressional seat." In related news, "alleged failure" and "lack of interest" are now considered the same thing. (AP)

Is that that woman who called me a couple of Saturdays ago at 10:30 pm? Yeah, I think that's her.

I love election season , the nut seem to come out of the wood work!

She needs to go hang out with Gerardo Sandoval ... that dude shows up uninvited to events and somehow manages to get the microphone to talk shit at all sorts of events ... the man has a love for himself that can't be denied.

Cynthia Sheehan = Cindy Sheehan or Cynthia McKinney?

Rosanne Bar called to tell me to vote for that kook the Tueesday.

I bet none of you called her a nut when she was out protesting Dubya.

Yeah Sandoval really is full of himself. He even forced his way into the Soapbox Derby. It was funny to hear all the boos.

I don't know why the media is ignoring her. Having Sheehan as a Congressional rep would be infinitely more entertaining to watch than the bureaucrat who's occupied that seat for far too long already.

The Chronicle should tell her they've bugged her phone and haven't heard anything worth reporting yet.

She is making a farce of her tragic loss

sfrealist: true that. I have absolute faith that her son would be humiliated if he knew what she's made of his death.

The idea that "alleged failure" and "lack of interest" are synonymous is pretty true in the world of journalism. The failure to report what is happening (Sheehan is actually running a viable campaign) is primarily due to a lack of interest on the part of the media. The lack of interest is because they have no investment -- you know, put $100 bucks in the bank, you start having interest. Put zero in there, you don't care. I spent enough time in the newsroom of a daily newspaper in my youth to know that news is created, not reported. The Chronicle isn't interested in Sheehan's campaign because they have investments elsewhere -- table assignments at ritzy dinners, full page ads from the Dems, etc.

Casey Sheehan was known to love his mother as much as she loves him. Like the rest of Cindy's family he would stand with her and despise those jerks who think a mother shouldn't grieve for the unwanted loss of her son due to a lying power-monger with a sophomore's smirk to the world.

What a bunch of smug, petty war-loving bitches. Pelosi has been appreciative of your continued support as she perpetuated the war, took impeachment off the table, retroactively immunized spying telecoms, and shoved an $800B+ bailout package up our asses. She's every bit as bad as Bush. I'd vote for a f#@king labrador retriever just to get her out of office. You'd be lucky to have Sheehan as your rep.

"She is making a farce of her tragic loss"

Being beaten by Pelosi isn't THAT tragic.

Myeh. Snarking about underdog candidates, activists, and other people trying to make a difference in the world (even if misguided) leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I think snark works a lot better when it's directed at the successful and powerful. Maybe I just have delicate sensibilities.

Nice post, Danuke. The Chronicle is consistently more conservative than San Francisco voters, and the Examiner is a stealth Republican paper (the McCain endorsement???) with two pages of token local coverage thrown in.

Say what you will about Sheehan, but it's impressive that she's only the sixth independent candidate for congress to qualify for the ballot in California. And maybe dissatisfaction with Pelosi isn't a fringe belief anymore.

Marketwatch talks about Sheehan's campaign and a Zogby poll I don't think the Chronicle or Examiner bothered to cover:

"A recently released Zogby poll found that nearly 87% of registered voters in California's 8th Congressional District think that they now are worse off financially than they were in January of 2007 when Nancy Pelosi was named Speaker of the House. The poll also showed that 43% of those voters opposed the federal government's financial bailout of Wall Street, a move championed by Pelosi in Congress."

We're probably the most progressive congressional district in the country, and Pelosi is a moderate machine Democrat.

I bet none of you called her a nut when she was out protesting Dubya.

Nope. I didn't call Code Pink nutty either, at first.

I received a robocall from Roseanne Barr on Cindy Sheehan's behalf from 415.509.8025. Upon calling the number back, I received a message saying the mailbox for "Cindy Sheehan for Congress" was full.

Aren't robocalls illegal in California (Commission Code Sections 2871-2876)?

It's just that Cindy Sheehan reminds me of the Palin of the left with her incredible lack of experience. I'm not a fan of Pelosi, but Sheehan is dangerous. She's on a mission following the tragic loss of her son, and she's putting her efforts into all the wrong places. I would never call anyone nutty for protesting, but she needs to learn when to stop.

good point. she seems more interested in being a celeb (she really should start her own political blog since that's the way to go about it in this town) than someone looking to change the lives of others for the better. which is fine by me, but...that really seems to be the case.
