Free Ghost Walks This Friday and Monday

tour31.jpgHey, Did you know that for the past thirty years, San Francisco City Guides has been offering sixty free walking tours a week (donations appreciated)? Well, we didn't, and we can't wait to check them out. We are especially intrigued by the Bawdy & Naughty and the Russian Hill Stairways tours.

City Guides is sponsored by the library and is a project of the Tides Center. In addition to touring SF's most (in)famous neighborhoods and hidden gems, they also offer seasonally-themed walks, including two special Ghost Walk tours tomorrow and Monday, lead by Rob Spoor.

Tomorrow night at City Hall: "Disinterred remains, assassinations and other ghostly lore form the focus of this tour, plus little-known facts such as the cemetery that once covered Civic Center. Who (or what) else might be walking alongside us?" Monday at The Palace: "Kings and presidents died here; gunshots echoed through stately corridors, romances ended tragically. Perhaps that explains enduring stories of spectral visions and mysterious occurrences. Join us for a tour of the unknown--and the supernatural!"

For those who can't make it to the ghostly tours, there are general year-round tours of both City Hall and the Palace Hotel. If you've been on a City Guides tour, let us know about it in the comments. We'd also love to hear about the ghost walks!

Ghost Walk at City Hall, Friday, Oct. 24 at 6:30 p.m. | Meet in South Light Court , through Polk St. entrance. (Allow time for security checks. Travel lightly - full security, including bag searches, will be in effect.).

Ghost Walk at The Palace, Monday, Oct. 27, 6:30 p.m. | Meet in lobby at main entrance, 2 New Montgomery St.

I do believe it was a City Walks tour where I learned whence the name Candlestick Point. Apparently it was a popular place for people to dump their unwanted ships; when the abandoned vessels caught fire (which apparently they were wont to do), the sight looked like candlesticks. Neat, eh?

City Guides, sorry! When will get an edit post feature?

This sounds like an interesting way to spend a Friday night.
Hm.
