Tanker Explosion Shuts Down I-880 Through Thursday, Detours Required

This morning's gasoline tanker explosion, which was carrying 8,600 gallons of gasoline and shot flames up to 50 feet in the air -- has closed down southbound Interstate 880 in Oakland through Thursday. "I would be very surprised if it wasn't up and running by the (Thursday) morning commute," says Mike Fahey, hazardous materials coordinator with the Oakland Fire Department.

Also, Westbound I-980 in Oakland is also closed down, or so says 511.org.

Check out the above detour map to find your way back home tonight. Or, head over to 511.org for more details.

..trying to burn down the freeway. AGAIN!

Yeah, between this, the overpass meltdown, and the Caldecott explosion, what is it with East Bay freeways and these tankers?

Why is 980 and the part of 580 between 980 and 80 closed?

I thought driving the 710 freeway in LA was scary-- no way. 880 South on a Friday afternoon gave me and both parents a scare to last us a lifetime. I'm really not surprised a tanker crashed AGAIN. Freeways in SF cannot handle big rigs (even if they were designed to handle them).

I used to drive 880 every day to get to work. Once I had a jackknifed truck push an AC Transit bus across 5 lanes of traffic several hundred yards in front of me. That freeway is scary.

I am happy to live in SF now and be able to safely bike everywhere. no joke.
