We're Milking The Mervyns Replacement Debate For All It's Worth

Man, you guys are good -- your suggestions for what should replace the Masonic Mervyns are awesome. So awesome, in fact, that we want to poll it out, bitches.

We've pasted one of those free poll thingies after the jump -- in the words of B-Gil, "It's a little big and slightly garish" for front page placement. So click on through and vote vote vote!

*Endorsed with an addendum for "Hoors."

NOTE: Some commenters endorsed more than one solution. Don't trip, this isn't the election. It's not even the People's Choice Awards.

Does it make me a "fucking arrogant genius" to vote for myself?

Does my idea get better if I insist that a Sonic or Dairy Queen also be added alongside this bowling alley?

As much as I would like a bowling alley, are you proposing a city subsidized one or something? Unfortunately, I think they are disappearing for a reason.

I usually do what Travin tells me, but isn't there a WF, like, right down the street?

Target FTW.

porkbun: no, because that was an awesome idea and Brock and I were both kicking ourselves for not thinking of it. And an addition of Sonic/DQ would put it over the motherfucking TOP. Also, let's get married, because we are on the same page, in the same book, in the same library. LOVE.

TheCharlie: I honestly thought you were kidding, because I have joked for years (because I am HEElarious) that Mervyns and Kohls are indistinguishable. Which, granted, with the launch of Kohls' El Cheapo Vera Wang, maybe they're not. Tell us more about why we need a Kohls, please.

xyz123: I can't speak for my spouse to be porkbun, who dreamt the bowling dream, but I wouldn't personally advocate publicly-funded bowling alleys. If the City can't get Muni right, I'm not ready for what they'd do to lanes.

Just because the ones we've had have closed, doesn't necessarily mean that one that's done right would suffer the same fate -- especially given the support y'all SFist readers are giving it.

What do you guys think, is there a way to run a bowling alley that would make it a success in the City?

The ironic point about having it be a SEARS is that it was a SEARS from like 1950 whatever until it became Mervyn's. For preservationist SF that would make it a restoration.

Come on people, the DC one's been open long enough. It's OK to call it by its actual name now. It's "99 Ranch."

I voted for everything EXCEPT:

TJ's (it's right there), WF (it's down the street & maybe closer if it gets built in the Haight), massive whore house (sorry fizz), housing (unless they throw in some non-luxury rentals) and Ranch 99 (I hear good things, but TJ's is right there).

Clearly it should become a pot club.

Correct, it's 99 Ranch. I was originally thinking of Kukje (국제), but I figured I'd never overcome the Chinese vote.

TAXABLE RETAIL, TAXABLE RETAIL, TAXABLE RETAIL

I would love for LIQUOR BARN to come back. Bring back 1980s prices.

I love TJs, 99 Ranch, pot clubs, hoors & bowling but we need taxable retail!!! Don't enjoy WF or indoor pools. Rainbow Grocery & outdoor pools FTW!

BTW, could we convince pantsgolum and other frequent posters to change their icons? Like zippy, cowsaysmeow & xyz123.

TAXABLE RETAIL, TAXABLE RETAIL, TAXABLE RETAIL

Now I know how people feel in a bad election: I don't want to vote for ANY of the options. BORing.

Oh F it. Liquor Barn, so you can get off the 38 when you just about can't take it and relieve the pain.

I hope your Target burns down.

you know...we could be going about this all wrong. Something we haven't yet considered...

...wait for it...

...wait for it...

A casino.

I go with the pot club, but not just any pot club. We need a big box gourmet pot clup. Call it Home de Pot.

Well done Anthony.

I vote Target, but I don't care what it is as long is Wendy's is somehow attached.

It doesn't matter what goes in there as long as it remains a nice convenient place for the gutter trash of SF to shoplift.

Why waste your time thinking up ideas when you know the Bored of Stupidvisors are going to put in a homeless connect office and maybe a place for junkies to shoot up. Oh, and a day labor pick up point.

Maybe they'll expand Kaiser hospital by using that space. It really ticks me off when I have to get a referral at the clinic building at 2238 Geary and forces you to visit the 6th avenue medical building.
