S.F. Activist Murdered During New Orleans Robbery

Activist and founder of the Really, Really Free Market in Dolores Park, Kirsten Brydum, 25, was killed in New Orleans last Saturday during an apparent robbery. She was shot in the head while riding home from a nightclub, with her wallet being taken from her. Brydum's body was found in a remote part of the city's 9th Ward neighborhood, and her killer is still at large.
Memorials, shrines, etc. have already been setup. So far there will be "a celebration of Kirsten at the RRFM [in Dolores Park] on October 25th, Food Not Bombs will likely serve," an alter has been created in the window of the Million Fishes Gallery, 2501 Bryant Street (at 23rd Street), and a memorial service will be held for Brydum on Oct. 4 at St. Bernadine Catholic Church in Woodland Hills.

this is really unfortunate... but let me say this - coming from a person who grew up near new orleans, i've been there at least a 100x, and I used to have friends who were from NOLA.. its GHETTO as f##k outside the french quarter.. ok.. ok.. maybe st. charles ave is all purty n stuff, and you really dig the area around Loyola and Tulane.. and maybe magazine street has some hipster vibe and esplanade has potential.. but the rest folks? straight up Candyman-eque ass-GHETTS!
its super dangerous there; anyone who ever states, ohh Oakland is scary and dangerous, clearly has never spent any time in the Big Sleazy. Now albeit, Chicago had 125 murders just this summer, NoLA is just down right callous in some spots. Especially in areas where the PJ's rule the roost: Fisher Projects, Desire, 9th Ward, 15th Ward, WestBank.. You just dont go there, especially late at night, a white girl, alone, etc.
I never had the chance to know Kirsten - she seems like a beautiful person with a great passion for life - just sucks that someone couldn't have warned her that the free spirit she embodied doesn't necessarily jive well with all the peeps in that area.
:(
R.I.P Kirsten
:: please no flames people.. i'm just trying to call out awareness in case anyone finds themselves down in N.O.LA with the curiosity to stroll out for some late night walk(s) into questionable areas in that city. Its a great place to visit, I encourage everyone to go at least once -- just be careful.
as I also participate in the reuse movement I posted this to an associated international group. Her presence will be sorely missed. Folks around the globe are sayin a prayer for kirsten.
