Attorney General Jerry Brown Harshes Mellow for California Prescription Drug Abusers

Former California Governor Jerry Brown is cracking down on prescription-drug abusers. Specifically, those of you you who enjoy the sweet, opiate-y release of drugs like Valium, Vicodin, and Oxycontin. "In addition to costing the state millions each year," the Attorney General's office pouts, "prescription drug abuse can have serious public safety consequences, as many of the top abusers hold down regular jobs including truck drivers, transit operators,...medical practitioners," and bloggers. So, it seems, Brown is going to "aggressively pursus[e] the top prescription drug abusers" in Califiornia.

Via a program that started last June, the crackdown has since "led to the arrest of dozens of suspects," like Frankie Greer, 53, who went to over 183 doctors and 47 pharmacies to tame his drug habit. In just one year, Greer "sought out multiple doctors at hospital emergency rooms to prescribe her over 4,830 hydrocodone tablets, 2,210 oxycodone tablets, 156 Oxycotin, along with a variety of additional addictive painkillers."

Say what you will about drug users, they certainly are a tenacious lot.

It's Purdue Pharma's fault for making such delicious products.

-Sales representatives told some healthcare providers that the drug had less euphoric effect and less abuse potential than short-acting opioids and exaggerated the differences between blood plasma levels achieved by OxyContin compared to the levels of other painkillers;

-Supervisors and employees drafted an article about a study of the use of the drug in osteoarthritis patients that was published in a medical journal, and the article was given to representatives for distribution to falsely represent that patients taking OxyContin at doses below 60 milligams per day could be discontinued abruptly without withdrawal symptoms; and

-Sales representatives told healthcare providers that a statement on the drug's package -- "delayed absorption, as provided by OxyContin tablets, is believe to reduce the abuse liability of a drug" -- meant that it did not produce a buzz or euphoria and had less addiction potential.

"Crackdowns" on drug abusers are all well and good if they involve treatment and rehabilitation and not just punishment.

How hard do you have to "crack down" to find someone "...who went to over 183 doctors and 47 pharmacies...In just one year..." Should be pretty easy to spot.

valium is not an opiate it's a benzodiazapim [sp]
