Interview: Jose Gonzalez

Oh man, the Swedes are so on fire these days. Seriously, we’re not sure what they’re putting in the water tonight, but it’s turning them all into incredible musicians. We know that you’ve been to a billion concerts in the last week, but you’re at the home stretch. Hey, if Jose Gonzalez can play four shows in the next two days at Yoshi's, we think that the very least you can do is show up. Luckily he provides ample reasons below to come check him out, and even guidance on which shows to come too. Not convinced? Just give a little listen here. We’ll see you there.

How much time have you spent in SF?
I've played there a couple of times, didn't stay here that long. I saw some of the city, while walking around. And also when we went out jogging for an hour to a park and back

What venues have you played here?
The Fillmore, and two or three others…

Impressions of San Francisco:
I've always felt like the people at the shows have been extremely interested in the music. And also have some friends here in Gothenberg that come from San Francisco that are very nice. It was fun jogging around p ark. It felt like a festival but everyone was older and homeless. Lots of people playing drums and hanging around.

Best venue in the world:
I don't know-- there's plenty. There is a venue in Copenhagen from the 60s. It's an old venue and they've preserved it nice, the sound is perfect and the people are very into the music.

The best fans are:
In Ireland in 2005—I don't know I've been there a couple of times and it feel s like back then they were amazing and now they've fallen behind some other countries. Mainly probably because I've played in venues and my music has been more popular than in Ireland. I always feel like it depends on which country and which day and which venue and not the actual crowd. It could be anywhere as long people are happy and drinking.

Why do you play classical guitar?
I love the sound compared to other instruments. It is very soft in the sound. I studied classical guitar, so it's the instrument I know best right now. I wouldn't be able to sit down and piano and sing. Growing up the music we listened to at home it was based on nylon string guitars. Mainly based on Latin American acoustic guitars and vocals. It's a nostalgic sound for me, I'm comfortable with it. Classical guitar was the only instrument we had at home. Growing up we listed to the Argentinean folk music my dad was into. In my teenage years Bob Marley, The Beatles....my sister was into them. Then later more of the stuff my friends introduced me to-- Public Enemy, NWA, the Misfits

What should people expect at your shows at Yoshi's?
I'm doing two shows a night. Four shows in two days. Probably pretty hectic. I heard it's a small place and that it has a lot of history. We're going to try to vary the shows. In generally I don't have enough songs to vary that much. I tend to get drunk towards the second show. If people want to see that, I tend to play worse on guitar on worse , but I sing better.

Swedish musicians seem to be taking over these days—what's going on over there?
I've heard so many explanations. I can only speak for myself. I had a lot of time during teenage years to spend just playing guitar and hanging out in the rehearsal studio. And a lot of friends that were into music and introduced me to a lot of music that would be difficult to find if it weren't for good record stores in the city. Sweden in general is.. .It's mainly American and UK influenced music. So we're not that good at Chinese music. Partly the language, we learn English in school from an early age, compared to Spanish people, or Germans, they can't pronounce English words.

What is your favorite song to perform right now?
My own songs I like a song called The Nest, it's a song I wrote w/ my girlfriend. Sounds sorta like a happy nice children's song I feel, but the lyrics are for grownups.

People should come see your shows at Yoshis' because:
I guess if they check out the music on the web and they like it they should go. Usually people seem to be happy with what they've seen.
