I think pigeons are fine. They're only filthy because they live in human filth. They've adapted amazingly well to our garbage filled cities. I think it's really arrogant to feel any irritation towards them when we're the ones who are polluting the planet.

I personally hate pigeons as I have had several bad encounters with them, so I am all for this system as long as it doesn't kill them. Also, I'm surprised that no one has commented on the name of the system...it's hilarious. I wish there was a "human-b-gone" to get rid of extremely irritating humans as well.

Bluecanary, you're a silly bird yourself. The 'shock' is akin to licking a 9v battery. How much 'charge' you think that little solar panel generates? As to the Macy's guy, I am sure he wasn't 'personally' against pigeons (I've met some very nice ones in my day) but probalby didn't like the damage they caused to the building. As to your suggestion to not build things with ledges, then of course, we'd have ugly sqare buildings with no details, which of course you would likely complain about too. Also note, pigeon guano in large amounts is actually considered hazardous waste and actually has to be cleaned up by the same guys, using the same procedures, as asbestos abatement.

A developer who does not want pigeon shit or hoboes sleeping on the ledges should design the building without ledges. I read that the Macy's guy freaking hated pigeons. So he had the building built without ledges. Don't like birds and hoboes? Don't make buildings that are inviting for them, and then put giant shockers and spikes and other rude things there. Deliberate cruelty looks far worse than no ledges.

They're there for deterrance, not execution. A building owner who doesn't want pigeon shit all over the building, windows, and sidewalks also does not want dead pigeons all over the same. The real shame of pigeon-shockers is that they don't also shock the idiot humans who feed pigeons.

These usually run on the edge of a ledge...where pigeons like to chill. A better implementation would probably cover more surface area, but this might be enough to push the pigeons to less problematic hangouts. And, at the least, it'll keep them from shitting right off the edge, which puts peds and windows in the line of fire.

What do you do... grab a bird and make it touch the shock-pad? How does this work? Would it deter birds? There seems to be plenty of unshocking surface available where the feathered could plan their mighty revenge or think bird-thoughts without a shock. I would just like to see this in action.

It doesn't fucking *electrocute* birds. It just shocks them so they'll go somewhere else. Pigeons are nothing but rats that fly, so...I vote yes. And this is not an extreme measure. Electric shock systems are common tools for pigeon abatement...not as common as they would be if they weren't so expensive.
