New Muni Shelter Revealed

Well, here's one of them, a preview of the new "green bus stop." They're temporary, we're told, which confuses us even more.
Also, we fail to see how this will make the buses start running on time, but...there you go.
Image taken at Fulton (sort of) and McAllister.

Tiki torches and flaming coconut cocktails to follow.
If I like it or not, no matter - the pigeons will love it!
How are they going to mow that thing? They will need to buy a $2 million bus stop mower and hire 3 specialized bug stop ground technicians at $110K per year. Where do I apply?
Entire buildings in Chicago have green stuff on their roofs.
I am a worse than usual typist today. Job description for "transit stop landscaping specialist" to follow.
I hope the installed sprinklers, or else that shit will be dead in a week. Wait, sprinklers wouldn't be very green, would they?
Oh my
this is temporary...the new shelters will come along soon enough and replace 'em all...still it just looks so strange!
the grass is always greener ...
It has a new 'Commuter' option installed. When a bus is running more than 10 minutes late, it ignites the Sensimilla on the roof and everyone is less aggro when the bus arrives. Brilliant! :)
This immediately reminded me of the vignette from Creepshow (the Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill) where the farmer played by Stephen King touches a meteor and starts growing grass out of his skin.

So if I glue some sod to the top of my Hummer, it becomes green? I'm off to buy some now. Also, a Hummer.
I'm wondering if the weight of those plants might hurt the structural integrity of the shelters, a lot of them are quite old.
Do we know where this shelter is located? Is it the only one?
what does this solve again? sorry, i missed that...
its hideous. like kindle hideous, like Pelosi gov't building hideous.... make it stop.
When you live in a city that has no running transit Muni is a blessing
Mayor Pompadour sculpts bus shelters in his own image. That green top sure does remind me of Gavin's helmet hair. Seriously, this is just more greenwashing by the Gav. Are we really paying multiple employees in the Mayor's office 150K+ salaries to come up with this stuff? The vandals will have a field day. Temporary because they are just a photo-op for a failed mayor.
What the...? This is progress?!
I now know where I'm going put all the gophers I've been collecting.
"From the people who brought you Chia Head"
kmsinsf, it's in front of the Asian Art Museum; Mayor Greenjeans is out there right now having his usual media jackoff if you want to go & laugh at him..........wonder how much Clear Channel $$$ he has in his pocket????
Another one of Newsom's publicity ops that do absolutely nothing to address Muni's myriad failures. Who gives a shit about grass on a roof when the friggin' buses don't run on time, and keep, you know, running people down?
And from an environmental standpoint, it's a joke, and more evidence that Newsom thinks being green means making things literally, GREEN. There's nothing environmental about grass that must be continually watered and maintained.
christ, he's a moron.
Simmer down now, that was put up as part of the Slow Food fest last weekend. It wasn't even city workers doing the install I saw Friday afternoon. I believe it was people associated with the event. Don't know if it's permanent or not. On brief inspection this morning, I don't even think it's grass. It's like chives and arugula or something. Seriously, I think it's a salad bar for tall hobos.
Its always that these demo projects are always nearby city hall, from the first talking and vibrating pedestrian crosswalk buttons, the flashing roadway lights for pedestrians, and now the bus shelter. What's next Newsom?
So happy I don't live in San Francisco and pay San Francisco property tax.
MUNI is and always has been a failure, a waste, an ugly, embarrassing orange and beige disgrace.
Who the fuck came up with this idea? The asshole in charge of MUNI who pulls down $300k a year?

Are. You. Fucking. Kidding. Me?
I DISAPPROVE OF THIS AND I AM CONSTRUCTING A COMMENT WORTHY OF DRAMA QUEENS EVERYWHERE TO SHOW MY DISPLEASURE
I for one welcome arugula at my neighborhood bus stop. Bus is late? Have a nutritious snack!

ROTFL!
Jesus Tap Dancing Christ, sheeple, it's a demonstration. As phlavor said, this is probably to do with Slow Food Nation and meant to make people stop and think about creative opportunities for urban agriculture. Unfortunately, y'all are so used to getting your knickers in a twist about anything and everything, you didn't stop to think at all before you started yelling. Must we be such CAVE people? (Citizens Against Virtually Everything)
Stop making this a referendum on MUNI's level of service, which is an entirely different matter. Perhaps when they announce a plan to install these all over the city you can have your little hissy-fits.
Wow.
People put sod on their buildings to insulate them. It works great.
There's nothing to insulate on a bus shelter. Sure maybe it's a demo but there's nothing green about this.
Exactly Wallcloud. Have any of you heard about the big shiny new building in Golden Gate Park with plants on the roof? It's opening this month. Hello?
Also, Fulton and McAllister are parallel streets, meaning they run in the same direction and do not cross.
Sheeple? I thought only Mike Malloy could get away with that one...
"Stop making this a referendum on MUNI's level of service."
If Newsom didn't want us making his little display a referendum on MUNI's level of service, he should not have used MUNI in his pathetic little attempt to score political points for his gubernatorial run.
It's kind of like announcing your 17 year old daughter is pregnant, and then saying people are so rude for not giving her privacy.
If you're going to put it out there, you have to expect that peopel will make of it what they will. Bottom line: this is money spent on what appears to be something MUNI related, and yet will not actually improve MUNI service.
Now people really will be able to watch the grass grow while they wait for the bus. Way to take back the metaphor!
Just wait until a bus slams into it and the sod goes flying.
I bet it gets stolen by a weird grass cult. "No arrests have been made"
Bluecanary, I think we are talking past one another a bit. I don't want this to become a private discussion, so I'll make this post my last.
I think we need more information because regardless of where the money came from and how the thing is being presented, one demo shelter is hardly worth such ire. Whatever, if any, MUNI funds were spent on it are hardly a drop in the bucket and were probably budgeted for "green" improvements anyway. If, however, we get wind of a plan for one on every corner, maybe that will be the time to raise a ruckus.
I doubt this is a gubernatorial ploy, but if it is, boy was it ever a doozy of a dud--that is, if SFist comments are any measure.
Even though I really enjoy green roofs on houses and commercial buildings, grassy bus shelter roofs are just ridiculous.
Does this remind anyone else of those previous marketing campaigns on bus stops? Got milk ads with freshly-baked cookie smells?

You have got to be fucking kidding me.
Is this a joke?
These morons continually impress me with their complete lack of responsible adult judgment.
It's almost like they sit around making it up stoned off their asses and everyone agrees.
Who is in charge here?
An all time low even for SF public officials.
What an absolute disgrace.
