Spare the Air Continues to Baffle, Astound

Surprise! It's a Spare the Air day. Who knew? Not us. The news only just now popped up on 511.org; and to make things extra-confusing, the alert is backdated to mid-June. Apparently they saw this balmy climate coming from a long way off. Thanks, Miss Cleo!

So, avoid running heavy machinery during the day, and try not to breathe too heavily. Unlike past StA days, transit won't be free today or tomorrow, which means the Air Quality Management District's "Leave Your Car At Home" request has all the teeth of a sobbing earthworm. Still, though, do try to take transit on hot days, pretty pretty please with sugar on top.

The Chronicle reported it Monday, I believe. Could be wrong, but I know I read and heard about it before today.

I always feel I'm missing out on something as a Muni fast-pass holder--just more crowded trains.

Oops, guess I didn't read where the fares aren't free today.

511 is apparently owned by the NextBus people.

511 is not owned by NextBus as far as I know. It's owned by the state -- by the Metropolitan Transit Commission -- and it's built and run by military contractor Science Applications International Corporation.

NextBus is owned by NextBus.

NPR told me on the way out the door - so if they knew it must have been a press release

Joel's right: SFGate announced the Spare The Air Day yesterday. It's also on for tomorrow (Thursday). You can subscribe to e-mail alerts at www.sparetheair.org

We don't have Spare The Air days here in Los Angeles, it would be redundant.

I'm taking my girlfriend's 500 hp CL55 and going to drive down 101 with the parking brake on. No free transit. WTF?

I'm taking BART to the airport on Thursday. I'm sure my 737 ride won't be sparing the air. :(

I've been sparing the air every day.

Spare the air and spoil the environment. Wait, that doesn't make sense. Damn Vodka spill.

For those who just moved here:

Spare the Air days have been happening (increasingly infrequently) since 1991. Transit was only free for like 5 or 6 of those days btw like 2004 and 2007.
