zip:

from
http://www.sfmta.com/cms/mfares/pop.htm

Checking of fares on buses and the F-line
If you already have a fare receipt, pass, or other valid evidence of payment of appropriate fare:
You must board by the front door.
You must show your valid evidence of payment of appropriate fare to the driver.

now, i'm not saying they shouldn't amend it so that back seat boarders with passes should be allowed to do so, i'm just sayin the lack of enforcement is probably costing quite a bit. i'm also not one of those "you have to follow the rules even if they are stupid" type of folks.. mostly i was just trying to point out that the dozen or so times i've seen drivers take the time to bust someone getting on the back there was only two instances where the person in question already had a pass.. i really don't share your optimism that most of the muni riders who are technically breakign the rules are just doing so because they are rebels who like to live on the edge with their muni pass. too much evidence points to the contrary.

travin munimanners.com has a pretty good array of people bitchin about stuff it's kind of funny. but ultimately pretty useless as an etiquette guide since, if the people who are usually lacking in that department haven't figured out basic civil behavior on their own they are hardly going to be looking up stuff about it on the web. i mean, do you really think the nail clippers or people who dump their trash or spit on the floor are sitting there wondering if it's appropriate to clip their nails on muni? i don't think the idea that other folks might be grossed out even crosses the mind in that case, its like a different paradigm altogether

In Rome and Venice, I got hit up by a plainclothes inspector for proof of fare on about every 4th bus/subway/vaporetto ride. Italy - famous for its efficient government.

I've never seen a plainclothes inspector on MUNI or BART. I see BART police all swatted out in the stations, I guess they expect to catch terrorists who forget to buy a ticket.

Brock, when might you start a thread about people's Muni etiquette pet peeves?

Seems ripe for the pickin, nose pickin that is.

@andyc it's not a matter of whether or not the buses are POP (they aren't). The point I'm making is that there are plenty of people who have valid fare media and board the rear doors of a bus... just like there are people who still insist upon showing their fast pass or transfer to the LRV operator... or disembarking from the front door of a bus.

zippy,
it is my understanding that the reason fare inspectors are not assigned to the bus lines is because people are supposed to provide proof-of-payment to the driver when they board. (i was talking about the 48 up there)

on the bredas it totally makes sense for fast pass folks to get on in the back (i do this too.) on the buses it often slows things down since generally people exit through the back door and if there's a bunch of people standing there waiting to sneak on they are not usually leaving a lot of clearance. note the exit only signs and other stuff posted on there..

leaving it in the hands of the drivers just means that on the bus lines there is very little enforcement. of the regular drivers on routes i take only 2 of them seem to bother. one guy on the 24 line is pretty hardcore about it and will call out anybody who gets on in back to come up and show their transfer or pass... which usually they don't have... :)

he refused to de-board the train. fare inspectors finally gave up after people yelled, probably because the BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP from holding the door open was pissing people off. it was annoying.

andyc: if I've already paid why should I wait in line to board the front? Don't discount the number of fast pass holders who are trying to board the back door.

well, i'd like to see the math about how many citations are given out on a day? i bet it adds up, plus the extra cash they make from people actually, you know, paying when they ride if there is more visible enforcement.

a few years ago whenever they rolled through it was pretty much guaranteed somebody was gonna get busted. lately it seems more like 50/50..

if you put an inspector on the back of the 48 you'd bust 7 or 8 people every time it rolls up at 24th and mission. there is usually a longer line of people waiting to get on for free than there is in the front. it seems like only a handful of drivers ever bother to enforce this, probably because they aren't interested in getting shot or slowing up their schedule..

it seems like a pretty thankless job, kinda like parking meter dudes. but calling "nazis"?? they are just there because this city is full of self-entitled jackasses who are too cheap/poor/lazy to even pay 1.50

Thanks Jameth for someone finally pointing out the Muni Nazis - I mean cops. Last week there were SEVEN, count 'em SEVEN of the lil' nazis when I got into Civic Center: 3 upstairs, two more on the platform; 2 on the train who got off @ Van Ness where 2 more got on = SEVEN. Think about this - seven salaries compared to the # of citations given out on a given day!
I'm glad folks got up & yelled at them - it's fuckin' ridiculous!!
