State Supreme Court to Doctors: Treat Gays and Lesbians Like Human Beings

This morning the California state Supreme Court ruled that doctors "must treat gays and lesbians the same as any other patient." What a novel idea, right? It all started back in 2000 when Guadalupe Benitez, a Southern Californian queer with baby fever, sued North Coast Women's Care Medical Group and two of its doctors in Vista for refusing to inseminated her because of their (alleged) Christian beliefs. Today's ruling, S142892, now means that California quacks can no longer use whatever mystical religious spell they're under as an excuse not to treat queer patients or as a defense in court. stick out your tongues and say ahhhh...

or, turn your heads and cough?!

does anyone know if this extends to docs/pharmacists using religious beliefs as an excuse to deny women of the pill?

Just received an email from Equality California saying that the Knights of Columbus just gift-wrapped a $1 million donation to the proponents of taking away the right to marry from same-sex couples in California. I told y'all the Catholics would rather spend money on taking away folks' rights in America than helping the poor, sick, and homeless. When are we going to revoke their non-profit status when they shove their hands this deep into our everyday lives and politics?

There was a front page story re all the money that's pouring in to get Prop 8 passed. Some hideous widow from some BFE middle state (Michigan, maybe) just gave $200K to get this amendment passed. Seriously, WTF? Why can't these people worry about their own jacked up states and leave us alone?

Yes on 8 has, according to this story, gathered more than $3 million in contributions, far more than No on 8. If you ever planned to give/donate time to an kind of political campaign, I think this one is pretty important.

Sorry, to clarify, that front page story was the front page of The Recorder, with a big list of all the local law firms who had donated to Yes on 8 (thus providing me a handy future job search guide of shithole firms I'd never want to work for).
