While not nearly as rude as an uncovered sneeze, a loud phone conversation (unless it involves a girl crying over matters of the heart, which is a richly satisfying eavesdrop), a protruding backpack, or this, we ask Muni and Bart patrons to refrain from using public transit as their personal nail salons. Clipping your fingernails (or, God forbid, toenails) is gross to watch/hear while riding home. So: don't.

but nail clippings go so well with the pumpkin seeds scattered all over the floor in the back of MUNI buses.
That made me gag. I would have intervened.
It's a cultural thing.
Yep, it's a cultural thing. You can tell them to stop, but they'll get back to it after you're gone.
Just...nasty.
pink plastic bags out of the shot somewhere? maybe?
clipping nails in public is a no-question, bad news scenario..
Remember, some cultures regard eating your food with a fork and a knife to be barbarian.
So instead of posting something so western-culture-centric, it's more interesting to post a compare-and-contrast story about how different cultures see things differently.
That gives me the shivers, especially the sound of clipping.
If there's no toe-jam involved, why does this article exist?
I tend to just haul off and bitch slap anyone pruning on MUNI. Backhand four finger stylie for extra effect, return on the palm side for egregious toes.
Most fellow travelers nod in approval, quietly clap and sip their triple soy latte's in approval.
Are the same cultures that think eating with a fork and knife is barbaric the ones who also spit enormous wads of phlegm relentlessly on every public surface and (judging from this photograph) groom themselves in public in such a manner as to leave little dead pieces of their bodies for the rest of us to deal with? What's next? Squatting and taking a dump in the middle of a train?
Somehow 5,000 years of culture seems to have had very mixed results.
ahhh yes, the dreaded farmers sneeze.
Gross Gross Gross
this happens ALL THE TIME on my bus.
It's nasty and just seems like common sense that you do NOT clip nails in public.
I would have lunged at her and taken the nail clipper, and thrown it out the window.
finger nail dust rocks!
Once on a train/metro in Europe, I walk into the car and there is this guy with his feet up on the table scrapping at his scaly feet with a knife.
A bit much...but someone filing at their nails shouldn´t be an issue...no?
Know what's also kind of rude? Taking embarrassing pictures of private people in secret and publishing them on the internet.
It just shows you don't even think of the subject as another person.
Manicures on MUNI are so 2003. The latest and greatest thing are all the people who floss their teeth on MUNI. It's totally '08. Why just the other day I watched a man floss a chicken wing out from his back molars, look at it danging from the floss thread and attempt to eat it again.
When you behave in a shameful manner in public, you're asking to have your picture taken and posted.
What's next, douching on Muni?
Personal hygeine upkeep in public anywhere is bad form. Yeah, cultural thing, etc etc....the kinda cultural thing that should be left in the old country along with the spitting and the running/pushing onto public transportation.
If this photo is on flickr it should be added to the Muni Mani-Pedi group.
Oh my god - at least once a week I see, or hear, this on BART.
What amazes me is how long it'll take some people to do their hands - I mean, it should take, what, twenty clips at most? Five minutes, tops? I sat in the same car as someone once who was clipping when I got on in Berkeley and they were still pruning when I got off at 16th street.
Can't some graphic designer come up with a sign MUNI could post for this? Maybe as simple as a set of nail clippers with a big red circle and diagonal line through them? Huge pet peeve. Huge.
OMG I thought I was the only one offended by this! And all this time I thought I was being racialist - I mean my god I would PAY to see a white person do this on the bus!
check out sevenmorris's comment above. said behavior isn't at all exclusive to "exotic" cultures.
miumiu,
ride the 48 bus back from 22nd St Caltrain station at, say, 6:45pm on a weekday. there's a professional young white guy who regularly clips his nails in mid-ride. it's completely baffling..
MT and kate: you guys are hilarious!!!
This drives me f'ing batshit! And thank Jebus I'm not alone on this one. And this totally is a cultural thing. In American culture this is not okay and should not be done on public transit or in public! That goes for flossing and douching to! End of story!
GACK! The *sound* of it...makes my stomach lurch.
As a 45 year Muni rider, yesterday I encountered the follow, a first. Woman in seat ahead of me applied her entire face make up complete with eyelash curling (not a first) and then took out sample cologne and applied it to her neck, behind her ears and on her arms followed thereafter by frantic black lacque hand fan fanning all the way downtown causing my seatmate to have tears and making several people behind me cough and gag. We said nothing to her as she had on ear phones. These days I just hope for basic civility and a Muni ride free from nose picking/flicking, loud cell phone talking, pushing, shoving, lack of personal hygiene and the like...
Damn, *too!!!
Winced my way through someone clipping something on an evening eastbound train. The perpetrator was of an entirely different demographic than the dude above or anyone pictured in that Mun Mani-Pedi Flickr group.
It's not a cultural thing, unless one considers "Clueless and Inconsiderate" to be a culture unto itself.
And, personally, I think it's also fairly inconsiderate to show identifiable faces of these folks, even if part of me thinks the public embarrassment is just desserts.
Dude above? I thought it was a female.
I'm pretty sure that's a man, baby.
I never have said anything to folks clipping their nails on MUNI or BART (or the nutjob who was filing his ARMS with one of those foot file thingies and letting skin flakes fly through the air) but find it to be repulsive and disgusting to watch and hear.
Oh, if only there was a way to prevent people from taking pictures of me while clipping my nails.
Oh, wait.
I vote for woman!
Gross! I'm Asian. Do that kind of shit in your own bathroom for Christs sake.........
definitely a woman.
