Speaking as a biologist myself it's not just medical research. Much of the basic research is being done on animals based on what I've seen. Sure, S. cerevisiae (yeast, used because it's a single-celled eukaryote), C. elegans (nematode, multicellular eukaryote), A. thaliana (plant), and D. melanogaster (fruit fly, breeds easily with a fast gestation period) are often the workhorses of much of molecular biology, genetics, and developmental biology, but there's still a lot of research being done that relies heavily on mice as a model organism. I can definitely say that as someone who has interviewed for positions in mouse labs this is deeply disturbing. I'm not even remotely concerned with international terrorism, but these people are most definitely terrorists and we need to come down against them hard.

ALF may not be the same as say Operation Rescue, or the Army of God, but whoever was distributing the home address of the researchers at the UC was certainly using the same tactics.

So, despite what your blog post claims, the ALF has not claimed responsibility for the bombings. As far as you or anyone else knows, it could have been anyone. And unlike pro-life extremists, animal rights extremists do NOT murder in the name of their cause. No buildings were burned down in Santa Cruz (a front porch was charred). Nobody was hurt, just like in 99.9% of ALF actions. This is well-documented. Now, check how many abortion doctors have been murdered by anti-choice nuts.

Thank you Brock, for making the point that the anti choice/animal rights movement may have more in common than they might be comfortable with. I remember the nineties and the clinic bombings, and all that, and although politically the animal rights/fetal rights are supposed to have evolved on different sides of the aisle, they look remarkably similar whilst throwing their bombs. And for the record, I dislike/won't support (economically or legislatively) animal testing and research!
