We heard KRON 4's divine and wildly chipper Darya Folsom talking about it this morning, but our Diet Coke hadn't kicked in yet so we didn't fully understand one of our favorite on-air personalities blathering on and on. (This happens a lot on KRON 4's morning show, though we strongly suggest watching it. It's TV that is, in a word, phenomenal.) What are we talking about? This: The Golden Gate Minute.en are protesting at City Hall today. A tipster tells us:
Noisy protest, counter-protest over at City Hall right now. The Golden Gate Minute Men (who knew!!) vs. various immigrant/human/whatever rights groups. Pasty-faced, grumpy overweight middle America types vs. young, shrill, incoherent protest-flavor of the month types
It turns out they're upset over San Francisco's policy shield of illegal aliens as human being, or for not deporting them back to Russia, or whatever, tipping their hats to the recent murder to Tony Bologna and his sons by El Salvadorian/MS-13 gang nerd Edwin Ramos. Exciting stuff. Pics to come. Hopefully.

ok, the sfgate is covering the story but it doesn't make sense to me ... does SF hand over felons to the FEDS for deportation or not?
I don't think it's really fair to compare them to the KKK. They are against *illegal* immigration. A lot of people are, hence the fierce debate going on in this country right now. Their website says they welcome people who arrive here via legal means.
There are numerous reasons for opposing illegal immigration, and not all those reasons are racist.

It seems that to even bring up the debate over immigration causes one to be considered a racist here in SF. Often that leads to the left setting the agenda which ends in policies that are not well thought out (see sanctuary city) followed by unintended consequences (MS-13)
If we decide that being a citizen has no meaning, no responsibilities and no privileges’ then so be it. However if there is still a difference between citizens and non-citizens then perhaps that would be a good place to start a discussion.
Just because someone is here illegally they do not have the moral high ground and understanding the concept of citizenship doesn't mean I hate mexicans.
ok after reading the comments on the chron website, what the Minute Men are protesting is the fact that official SF policy USED to be to shield juvenile felons who were determined to be in the US illegally from the FEDs.
In which case, while their timing is off, I have to say I would side with the minutemen.
I gotta go with my gut here that someone who is in the country illegally and commits a felony should be handed over to US immigration officials, unless someone here can give me a solid reason why SF should be shielding felons from US laws.

It is not fair for this story to be accompanied by a picture of a burning cross and KKK people. It doesn't matter what side you are on this is just pure meanness on the part of this web site. We need to stop demonizing each other. The fact that this web site is participating in generating FEAR and HATE against people who are our brothers and sisters (even if we don't always agree).
How can we make the argument that immigrants need to be treated fair and without hate when we are doing the same thing back? I just can't support this authors choice of images. Pure propaganda... we need to be better than that. I'm ashamed.
OK, I'll try to explain this again. Being against illegal immigration is not, in and of itself, reason to suspect you of being a racist. However, getting all foamy-mouthed, batshit insane over a non-issue like illegal immigration highlights how desperate you are to find an acceptable excuse to hate Mexicans. Clear now?

I find that the Minutemen-types are also the Hands-Off-My-Guns-types who are also the Fuck-You-If-You're-Not-In-My-Church-types who are also the Small-Government-types who are also the No-Payee-Taxes-types who are also the No-killee-unborn-baby-types. Um, I would agree, the Minutemen aren't the KKK. The KKK are a terrorist group. The Minutemen might be stupid, but they're not bombing or assassinating anyone.

I agree that being against illegal immigration does not necessarily make you racist...but come on people, we all know that the type of people who would go out of their way to protest this are clearly the racist types. The minutemen group was started down in OC, and most of the minutemen there make it very clear that they are specifically against immigration from our neighbor to the south.
Wow... I can't believe some of the closed mindedness I hear from posters. Racism is a very serious thing that is emotionally charged.
If you think the minutemen are racist how do you explain the people of color (black brown and yellow) who are members of their group and were at the rally? Are those African Americans who oppose illegal immigration because it's hurting opportunities for jobs and growth who are citizens? It just doesn't make sense. The KKK is racist because they obviously don't allow black members.
The minutemen are pro legal immigration (of all races) but against ILLEGAL immigration. That is not racist it's actually sane. It is wrong for the media and some posters to try to frame it as a racial issue when it clearly is not.

It really begs the question then WHO is REALLY playing the 'race card" the minutemen or their detractors? I would say by the comments and the image attached to this article that the detractors are the ones trying to use race. How can one justify flaming racial tension? Making a political issue into a racial one?
I think us on the left need to stop for a minute and re-think what's going on here.
For example to me the "immigration" issue is really an "environmental" issue. We know that the most damaging thing to the environment is overpopulation. America had been decreasing in population due to efforts in the 70's and 80's to do "responsible family planning" to mitigate the "population boom". Even with large amounts of legal immigration things were still going well. Illegal immigration has totally blown all this work away. We are now overpopulating. This is why we are seeing water shortages, food problems, housing booms and busts and more pollution. I know right now undocumented workers tend not to drive for obvious reasons. Imagine if we make them all legal and add another 30 million drivers to our roads. We are killing our environment. We need to get a handle on it and this is not helping. I don't think there is anything racist about that...in fact I can't understand why other people around me who say they care about the environment don't realize this as I do. What about overpopulation?
