Mother Giraffe Dies at SF Zoo

An eight-year-old mother giraffe, one that recently gave birth in Febuary this year, died at the SF Zoo today. (Giraffes usually live anywhere from 15 and 20 years.) Gezi collapsed today a little after noontime, and succumbed to cardiac and respiratory arrest. If you recall, over four years ago two elephants died at the local zoo, and just last year a tiger named Tatiana was shot and killed after mauling a visitor. What leads us to ask: Is the is zoo deathtrap now? Should they instead make it into a theme park with zany rides? Maybe call it "The Haunted ZOOOOOOOOOOO!"?

Having mastered operations of Muni, it appears that the SFMTA is now running the zoo, which makes sense, seeing as how they're related.

How many animals/people have to die before they shut that hellhole down?

Haunted zoo. I'd probably go then.

Yeah, but how much in control could they be over cardiac arrest? Not that I would ever go into that sad grotto.

My fiance was temporarily wheelchair bound (knee surgery) on our last trip to the zoo. The wheel of the chair caught in the mini train tracks and tragedy was only narrowly averted. With a full compliment of wild animals, menacing railroad crossings, and a train tunnel that's still full of Christmas decorations, that place is a Scooby Doo episode waiting to happen.

Or an episode of Murder She Wrote...

that would be awsome. i love angela lansbury.

and, what?

I was there today when the giraffe bought it. Security staff closed off the savannah; everyone thought something had escaped again. All security said was that there was going to be a medical procedure on the giraffe, and that "people might not want to see this."

They put up some tarps around the fencing near the giraffes, and that was that.

News flash: things die. Do you really think a zoo employee could predict or stop a heart attack in a Giraffe? Plus, 8 out of 15-20 years, is like middle age, and we all know middle age humans get heart attacks...so why not Giraffes?

I will never take my self or my kid to that zoo. Animals from sunny, hot, savanna zones should not be kept in freezing cold fog all day and night. Its depressing and bad for their health. Yes, when will they shut that hell hole down?

I went to the SF zoo seven years ago, and I will never go back. Everything about it was depressing.
