Walgreens vs. Board of Supervisors: Smoke 'Em If You've Got 'Em

plug%201%20is%20everywhere.jpg

Plug 1 from WhatImSeeing (he seems to be everywhere all at once!) sent us this image today after he picked up a pack of cool, smooth, refreshing Parliament Lights. It seems Walgreens, a chain that can do no wrong in our eyes, is handing out these flyers when you buy cigs today. Check it:

ATTENTION WALGREENS CUSTOMERS

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors is proposing an ordinance that unfairly targets Rite Aid and Walgreens, preventing ONLY them from selling tobacco products.

Please contact the Board of Supervisors and tell them:

This proposal will make it less convenient for you to shop for all your needs in one location in your neighborhood, while limiting your access to legally available products.

The proposal will force smokers to liquor stores, tobacco shops, gas stations or other retailers that don’t carry smoking cessation production and don’t have pharmacists available for advice on quitting. [Chortle. -- SFist]

Please let the SF Board of Supervisors know that this ordinance is unwanted, unfair and punitive to smokers.

Contact the Board Immediately at (415) 554-5184 or email at board.of.supervisors@sfgov.org.

But Walgreens is the place to go on the walk of shame. Smokes, mouthwash, Advil, clean t-shirt, deodorant, all in one handy place. (I don't actually purchase the deodorant, I just give my balls a quick squirt then put it back on the shelf).

walgreens is the only place/thing that makes me truly happy. walgreens = zen.

Pretty sure this is Mayor Newsom's proposal that is being considered by the board ... I'd at least CC: the Mayor to let him know that you think it is BS for the City to pick and choose which retailers can sell cigarettes.

there's nothing better than the look on the cashiers face when i plop a Primatine Mist inhaler and ask for two packs of P-Funks.

I'm torn. On the one hand, Walgreen's consistently has the lowest prices for smokes ($7 and change for 2 packs! HOLLA!). One the other hand, I'm quitting in 2 weeks.

So, since I'm quitting, fuck all y'all. I'm for the ban.

Plug1, do we need to stage an intervention?

AngyBat - In three weeks you won't be.

Angrybat, yeah and I'm starting my diet after I have McDonald's and eat a whole cheesecake!!

Anything that discriminates against Walgreens is a ok in my book.

@Angrybat: Did you have to go and have a smoke to think about that?

try buying cigarettes and diapers and then lets talk

"it's apparent you're a parent when..."

Chris Daly can have my $3.75 pack of cigarettes when he pries it from my cold, dead hands.

Shouldn't be long!

Title correction: "Smoke 'Em"...

You're welcome.

Doesn't that violate some sort of equal protection clause or something? I mean I can understand that small retailers were excused from the plastic bag ban, but to point out too specific chains and say "you can't sell ___" seems pretty discriminatory.

what about Longs? They just opened one at Van Ness and Pacific!

what, Executionsinfo? i couldn't hear you because my head just exploded. that is awesome. Longs sells booze!

lung cancer meds and cigs all in one convenient shopping experience...

There are actually dirt cheap cig shops floating around that are actually slightly cheaper (probably because they make most of their money selling pipes and whatnot)

There's this one place (I forget the name) on Mission between 19th and 20th that is pretty much always cheaper than Walgreens.

Any government entity that wants that much power is dangerous as all get out. Next thing you know, we won't be able to buy ammo at Long's...oh...never mind, too late.

Ahhh... Walgreens. Where the plastic bag ban is a bunch of bullshit.

All they had to do is just use thicker plastic bags and put the words "reusable" and "recyclable" and presto, screw Supervisor Ross's policy.
