Yesterday a commenter asked for a PDJ with "a little humor, class, and grace," an image "representative of the better side of this town" Well, we tried. Each time we attempted to save an image of Dede Wilsey, our system crashed. Rightfully so. And there were just too many of Vanessa Getty from which to choose. So this? Is the best we could do.

Goddamn. I know it's not kosher to feel bad for these guys, but, hell.

Seems kind of messed up to post a picture of this dude on the web. Shall we post a picture of you on the web when you're not exactly in your finest hour?

Umm, nope, it is not too late. You're just a dick.

wait so do we call the police or the mobile assitant patrol?

Excellent! I couldn't make it to the wax museum in person, I am so glad that SFIST is here for me!

Excellent new gallery!

FourMajor, you're dense. also, if you close your eyes real tight, you won't see any homeless people at all. voila!

I can look right out my window and see homeless people. But to shame them on a popular website is just awful.

What's with the rise in anti-SFist commenters? Is this site going to turn into SFGate where people use every article as a chance to slam the website?

What's really shameful is the pair of striped pants Brock is wearing today.

I was using passedoutwookies.com to shame them. Should I just use the SFist now? Just let me know, thanks.

Clearly, SFist champions consistency in its content.

how is this shaming "them," FourMajor? please advise.

FIGHT! fourmajor vs. brock.

all bets go to brock. love it.

As if it weren't already clear, let me spell it out for you. You are disrespecting a fellow human being by showing him while he is down. I am sure you realize that many homeless in San Francisco are homeless because of drug addiction or mental illness. You are essentially making fun of him for being unfortunate enough to have these problems. Many people with these problems did not always have these problems and at one time led very respectable lives; I know several examples personally.

Of course I realize that not all homeless people are on the streets for these reasons. Regardless, I don't think it makes this even better, even if the photographer had actually talked to this man to get his story.

Everyone has their moments and periods in their lives they they are not very proud of. That doesn't mean we need to publish these moments on the web for all to see.

Caution, FourMajor. Only Brock may refer to dicks with impunity on this website.

Also, porkbun: If one doesn't agree with a post on this site, one should just keep one's mouth shut? Is every comment only to be in praise of sfist and his Brock-ness? Unless it explicitly says so in the TOC, I'll slam all I want, thankyouverymuch.

I agree with FourMajor; this post is tasteless and disrespectful. Brock has every right to post it, but it says an awful lot about him.

FourMajor and zoiks, your altruism is a lesson to us all.

That would be TOS, heh. Or whatever.

Is that the "Leprechaun" who used to roam Kerney? I haven't seen him for years.

Brock, your latest reasoning has made me reconsider. You are right.

FourMajor: FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, GET THE FUCK OVER YOURSELF.

fizzandpop also adds priceless comments to the debate.

But seriously, is it the Leprechaun?

who said anything about shaming?. People that live in the area see this 10-20-30-40 times every day. Are we not supposed to look now?

That gate is the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, btw

is it shameful for the people being photographed on a public street, or for the city officials that supposedly are running those streets?

Well then, since we should figure that all homeless people are "down," there should be no images of the homeless on the web. Problem solved!

Sucks that you think he's a punchline.

I'm sure when this guy logs on to his Macbook at The Beanery later today and sees this photo as he sips his Americano, he will be ashamed of the spectacle he's made of himself and change his ways.

That said, I'm not sure why this photo was necessary.

Thank you, auweia1, for actually posting some counter-points. Makes it much more interesting.

I believe I addressed my views on why it is shameful to post something like this on the web. The actual taking of the picture, I don't suppose there is anything wrong with that, but to display it publicly for all to see, that is what I have the problem with.

Of course, it is a shame that the problem(s) exist to begin with. I'm afraid I can't offer a solution to the problem.

How about those that are now mentally ill or otherwise lacking any horse sense because they decided to drink and drug their brain cells away? No sympathy for those folks from me .... they made their choices.

God, can't you people see that FourMajor is just a better human being than the rest of us. Jeez.

Really? REALLY?? c'mon SFist.

I honestly don't see what Brockist has done wrong here. I didn't think he was making fun of the hobo for one second.

Maybe you guys (and maybe Brock) think I'm giving Brock too much credit, but are you guys really so dense you didn't pick up on Brock making fun of YOU guys for demanding that he and Jameth and SFist focus on the bright side of SF? We've got problems. That hobo up there has problems. THERE ARE F***ING PROBLEMS! Your insistence that we not only not see them, but that a website you read display only the cheery Vanessa Getty's is way more damning that posting a picture of the problems.

Shallow pricks. (But thanks to FourMajor for not devolving into calling people pricks.)

I think I'm desensitized to this whole thing or it's just Friday. I can't form an opinion today. Dang.

OrangeDrink, absolutely. The only thing being done here and with Jameth is posting something that he, and many others see every day.

You can say were taking it from one neighborhood and exposing it to other neighborhoods, which is sort of ironic, because there is this ongoing suspicion that this area is a containment zone

example, see here >

http://www.beyondchron.org/articles/Can_San_Francisco_Make_Low_Income_Neighborhoods_Desirable__4489.html

It's pretty wekk known, actually, but unofficially, because if Sfist could ever get a city hall official to admit it in print, that would be big news, and a scandal

a 'containment zone' means that the police are taking people out of the better neighborhoods and dumping them in this neighborhood, so it's been NIMBY everywhere else for over 30 years now, and now there's people moving into this neighborhood saying WTF...

and then posting that WTF on the intenet brings it right back to those...er...other neighborhoods, which sort of makes people in the other neighborhoods also say WTF....

Brock, I'm sure FourMajor has never insulted anyone when they were down. Obviously he is the model homo sapien.

Brock, one more thing, thanks for never letting me forget that we as a city are so horrible that we allow people to get and stay like this man while people with homes and jobs walk by and do nothing. The truth hurts and this picture is Exhibit 1,247.

I think the number of liquor stores per block may have something to do with where the drunks congregate. There are plenty of homeless in and around Rincon Hill, but they don't look nearly as shitfaced ... I credit that to a lack of liquor joints and the lovely waterfront around Rincon Park.

Good Tip Rincon!

I'm headed that way after work tonight! I'm going to get absolutely SMASHED on the lovely waterfront!

So much wank, so little time.

We're featuring pirate booty on the Piers too ... more reason to come to the water

I'd rather look at this pic than all the aggro riders in Critical Mass............

1)The idea that we should be "doing something" for homeless people instead of making fun of/talking about them is admirable, but silly. San Francisco does more for the homeless than most other cities in America. Doesn't seem to help the problem much. Of course, we could all quit our jobs and start doing social work, but then the economy would tank. Maybe we could try to talk to the guy and walk him to a shelter, but he'd probably scream obscenities at us and maybe attack us, because he's definitely fucked up on something. It's lose-lose, so why bitch about it unless it's your job to?

2)The people who are pissed that SFist posted this pic and that people laughed about it are probably the same people who got all sanctimonious about the Obama New Yorker cover. Unless you're libeling/slandering/defaming someone, or just plain lying about something, there's no reason you shouldn't post This guy is lying on the sidewalk where we/you/I walk every day. He is the fairest of fair game, and if anything, posting this pic promotes discussion.

See?! Now I just put the baby down and now he's crying again. Damned you SFist! *shakes fist*
