Crack Monkey

crackmonkey.JPG

This ancient picture (1999!) of this contributor blasting a wallie off this sketchy bump-to-wall was taken on 15th Street, between Mission and South Van Ness. He was 20-years-old at the time.

The angle on the run-up at this spot was a little awkward and clearing that sidewalk gap was quite a leap, but from what we recall, it didn’t take us too many tries to land it. In fact, we pulled it a couple of times. We particularly like this photo because of all the different stuff to look at, such as the “bus hopper” style tags on the wall, the grit and grime on the sidewalk and street, and if you haven’t already noticed, at the bottom right-hand corner of the picture you can even see a fisheye enhanced shadow of a skateboard.

However, what you can’t see in this photo are the two young boys (brothers maybe), ranging in age from 9 to 12, that are smoking crack cocaine a mere 15-feet away, just outside the left frame of the shot. No lie. It was probably one of the most disturbing things we’ve ever seen. What's more, both boys were hitting that dirty glass pipe like they’d been smoking rocks their whole lives, which led us to believe that they were probably born into this world with a crack monkey attached to their backs. Who knows though, they very well could have picked the habit up on the street.

Ten years have now passed since this photo was taken, meaning these two boys are now in their late teens or early 20s, and we can’t help but wonder what became of them. In the immortal words of the late Rick James, "Crack’s a hell of a drug." (By Travis Jensen)

Matt Reasons had one hell of a wallie.
So did/does Jason Adams, Matt Field, Tim O'Conor,
Rickey Oyola.....

How many people on here know what the hell I'm talking about?

Skateboarding on SFist....crazy.

i saw two guys doing coke on the K-line last night. they even managed to spill some on the seat and then there was some drama when some lady tried to sit there. maybe it was them? they looked more mid-30s tho.

If we are talking wallies, don't forget Chris Cook and Brian Tucci(first person I saw do a wallie-boardside in 1987)

Brian Tucci(yes yes)....but what about Danny Sargent!

Used to skate/hang with Mikey Carroll and his older brother (whose name I just can't remember right now) @ Embarcadero back in the mid to late 80's. Bryce Kanights used to come around once in a while and take a few shots and show off a few tricks too...... Do the kids even skate China Banks these days??????

bbrooks and sf bikebike: What a strange coincidence. Brian Tucci happens to be a really good friend of mine. He's back in Washington D.C. now and still rips. I actually just talked to him this morning. And you're right, Tucci can do all types of obscure wallie and wallride combos.

Also, Danny Sargent is still around. I just him a couple weeks ago at Potrero Del Sol. He was ripping, classic Sarge steez.

Wolf1: Mike Carroll's older brother's name is Greg. He runs Empire Distribution now. As for China Banks, damn, I haven't skated that spot in years. It's a HUGE bust now.

I messed up. This photo is actually from 1998, which would make me 19. Sorry, those days can be a little blurry at times. Also, Darin Back shot the photo.

Thanks for the memories. Have lived in the vicinity over 17 years. We called that area Greater Crack Valley. Closer to the formerly decrepit Valencia Gardens, that area was known as Inner Crack Valley. Of course 16th & Mission was and still is Smack Valley. Cute nicknames in the nineties for the substance abusers used to be Crackette (F) and Crackelle (M) and Junkette (F) and Junkelle (M) and their signature territorial markings on other people's properties were called heron turds.

HA! We used to call Sixth Street "Wine Country South".........
