Halloween Bash Moves to SOMA
As we mentioned last March, Halloween in the Castro as you knew it has been canceled. Boo. The City's official Halloween celebration will instead move to SOMA in the parking lot of AT&T Park. It seems this year's bash will "include an early evening, free gathering for kids and a more adult-friendly, paid event later in the evening, which will feature local musicians and artists." The Entertainment Commission, sigh, is also looking to put on a party at Pier 39. How the city will pay for the event marketing, whether or not booze will be sold, and if gang rapes will see an all-time high on Stillman Street is still up in the air. But we do know that the Castro will probably end the being the place to be again come 10/31.

It's unfortunate that the event has to be moved to another location...but what's the deal with the "paid event"? It almost sounds like the event was cancelled and move just so the City could raise revenue.
Oh man, I'm so excited to go from one of the most stridently independent and eccentric neighborhoods in the US to a... parking lot.
Nice guys, real nice.
No booze in a parking lot? SOUNDS AWESOME.
Seriously, if they close down Lucky 13 again this year I'monna fucking riot.
i wonder if the castro will close again this year? let's find out! please standby.
They tried this back in 1996, holding a big party in the Civic Center. It totally sucked. Everyone went to the Castro anyway.
I think they are trying (they being the morons in city hall) to pay for all the illegal aliens they need to fly down to EL SALVADOR...
Sounds like a glorified company picnic.
Well said, the_absentee.
This will be as awesome as the Huey Lewis New Years Eve at Embarcadero ever was. I'm guessing the closest this will come to the embargoed Castro Halloween is that the Tommy Castro Band will inevitably headline the side stage, as is their also-ran wont.
As long as no 'citizens' get hurt, then this will be a success. But I doubt people will stay away from the Castro... Why don't they get real.
If they allowed neighborhoods to host parties in the same areas where people congregate on the weekends, it might could just work.
The marina could have a party
The castro could have one
Dolores Park could have one
and maybe the big softball field in potrero could host one.
or we could just have chaos again.
^^^Dolores Park!!!
Brock, Curbed SF is saying that this will be some sort of freaky burning man type of production - which, lame as it sounds would probably get people's attention... after all burning man equals tits on stilts right?
