Jeff in Market for New Car, According to Analysts

jef.jpg
"If you want to sell your car, call Jeff," said a sign tacked to a Russian Hill phone pole this weekend. There's a phone number attached, but here's what's weird: a little Googling reveals a rogue's gallery attached to that number. According to one page, it's transitional housing on 9th Street. According to another, it's a publisher on Clement. And Google's cache reveals a slew of Craigslist postings for psychics from Albany, Flagstaff, and Anchorage.

Which is a shame, because aside from the sketchy phone number, this offer seemed so reputable.

Someone put the same exact sign on my car about 8 months ago...wierd.

don't you think a psychic that didn't know your car was for sale is kind of lame?

;)

A few weeks ago, someone put business cards with "I want to buy your car" hand-printed on them and a phone number under the windshield wiper of every car on my street. What's he going to do with all those cars? Urban mysteries.

I got this note in my car as well and though it was perfect timing as I was planning on donating. The guy gave me this scpiel that he wanted to pick up a car for his son so he can get a job delivering pizzas. When I asked why the phone number was a Salvation Army number, he dodged it quickly saying it was his father's number and didn't seem like he wanted to talk about it. He wanted to see the car the same day so I set up an appointment. Not feeling 100% sure about this type of transaction, I called around trying to get info and dialed the transitional housing house that this was supposed to be originating from to see if they knew anything about this. The operator kept transferring me back over to a general operator, effectively evading any of my questions before I could tell her anything. After this runaround, I felt like something fishy was going on, cancelled my "appt" and proceeded to donate my car rather than have someone stiff me on the title transfer. I can't quite understand the racket though.

Maybe the plan is to write a lot of bad checks?
