Carless Sundays Not Complaintless

san-francisco-report-1320-7.jpgLast week, Gavin introduced plans to close down parts of the Embarcadero from the Bay View to Chinatown between from 9 AM to 1 PM on Aug. 31 and September 14 for some sort of car-free free free-for-all. Plans include everything from yoga to roller rinks to bikers biking and a whole lot more for those seeing some frolicking. Good idea, right?

Complaints to commence in 3...2...1....

The main people howling against the idea is the business community at Fisherman's Wharf who are concerned that they'd lose money because people would be unable to drive down the Embarcadero to buy their "Alcatraz Swim Team" sweatshirts. Nevermind that there's other ways of getting there or that tourists could, ya know, walk there. Aaron Peskin, the Supervisor who represents the Wharf, jumped at their command and, along with Sean Elsbernd and Michela Alioto-Pier, threw down the gauntlet and proposed putting the thing on hold until one of those "environmental impact reports" could be done, thus ensuring that the thing would probably see the light of day sometime around the time a sequel to "Speed Racer" comes out. Also mentioned as reasons not to do it are the arrival of two cruise ships and, of course, the process.

For those fans of Board of Supervisor intrigue, originally Ross Mirkarimi was added to a list of sponsors, invoking the wrath of tons of progressives who are behind the idea and in a dogs and cats lying together type of situation, are behind Gavin on this. Mirkarimi said his name was added to the bill by accident, something that set off Peskin who allegedly said some naughty things in response. Gavin (who nixed a third day in response to complaints from the business community) did some eye-rolling at all the controversy and wondered just who was going to be driving at those hours anyways.

A hearing will be held Monday about the thing.

Arrival of TWO cruise ships? Have you ever seen the madness of traffic of the people who disembark and board the boats?

Taxi drivers trying to pull a $50+ fare to the airport from the docks... pull out your batons (I would say guns, but lets not go nuts), it's time to beat up people dancing in the streets!

I agree. There is almost no greater danger to bicyclists in this city than trying to ride down EMB during a disembark. A close second is next door, the Farmer's Market Of Death And Blind People.

I wonder how this will affect Napolean's shot at becoming the top bully of the Democrat's local DCCC? HOpefully, the DCCC committee has enough good sense to recognize electing a bully to the chair job would be a huge mistake. Democracies entail elected officials trying to do the most good for the most people .... not pacifying the special interests.

"Democracies entail elected officials trying to do the most good for the most people"

You are aware that America is a Constitutional Republic very different from a Democracy.

Personally I don't care because I don't have a car, but I find it interesting that Newsom was annoyed about the GGP closures for the same reasons that the supes are now annoyed at this proposal.

In all fairness to the merchants and others who would potentially be affected, there really should have been more planning and communication going on.

They also want to make the T and the F lines free for those days - nice in theory, but economically stupid. Then again, that's nothing new for SF...

I think it's a great idea to make the T and F free (within the closure only) since people are just going to walk or ride a bike along that stretch... unless they have a fast pass anyway.

I rarely agree with the spokemayor, but complaints about this thing have no merit. It wouldn't be blocking any street crossings, and the closure ends blocks from pier 39 (their loss anyway, because more people will be walking down the street these days than could ever hope to fit on it in a car).

If the sky falls you can hold me accountable, but heel dragging on something like this is senseless

TWO days where you can't drive down ONE street for several HOURS!?!?

Holy shit people, the world will END!!

I guess we'll have to settle for 920 miles of streets to drive on instead of 922.
