Sunseteers have a lot of crosses to bear, among them crappy weather, the N Judah, and that pitying look people get on their faces when they tell people they live in the Sunset. But here's a small triumph -- soon the crippling market confusion they experienced by having two completely different restaurants with nearly identical names within two blocks of each other will be assuaged.
No more will folks try to order organic vegan sausage at Underdogs Bar and Grill (1824 Irving), nor will Underdog (1634 Irving) have to endure patrons stomping in and yelling "We're here to watch the game, BRO! WOOOOO!"
That's right, in what must have been a furious game of nomenclature chicken, Underdogs Bar and Grill blinked. SF Weekly is reporting what sounds like a fairly, hmm, laid back (?) rebranding strategy, as the owner is "offering a $500 for the best new name/concept. Just show up tonight between 8:00 p.m. and midnight (and) make your best pitch."
That's not much time to come up with a 500-buck winning name, but we're sure SFist readers are up for it. Any of you been there (or to its predecessor, the truly awful Peko Sushi) and are inspired to propose a new name? (Not that wed disdain proposals from those of you who've never been there, of course.) Face it, this is as close to Restaurant Wars as most of you will get, so hit us with your name ideas in the comments.

The place is almost always empty, and when it isn't, it seems like crummy stuff happens (fights, etc). Nice enough place--the service is always really good, it's clean in there, and the food is nice, but it doesn't seem to have gained much traction.
I suppose The Sunset could use a decent wine bar, but I bet that'd go over like a lead balloon.
I'm just surprised the bar gave in first...I thought they switched to Underdog right before the sausage joint opened up.
Maybe they should change the name to "Sweet Polly's."
They should name it The Underage*. I'd go. Giggetty, giggetty.
*I mean under 21, not the other underage.
Bring back Molly Malone's
Sunset Frat House...........

what kind of unholy concoction must vegan sausage be?
I've had their vegan Italian sausage and it was pretty good. I'm a big sucker for their apple-and-chicken and their red-hots, though.
Speaking of, that's what Underdog's the sports bar should become...a beer bar. U&U can join forces and become The Sunset's very own Toronado-Rosamunde. Have a few belgians at the bar, and then play dodge-and-weave with the cars rocketing down 19th Avenue to go get a garlic pork sausage at Underdog.
My vote is for "PEKO SUSHI WAS HERE AND WAS WAY BETTER."
This place is a lame attempt at a sports bar. The atmosphere is stale and the drinks are weak and overpriced.
how about shooter's
or the unsolved?
shit, too soon?
