While I agree that ticketing shouldn't be a form of revenue the city recently decided (or, perhaps only discussed) increasing fines across the board to make up for the budget shortfall. That makes it much more in line with a revenue effort. Enforcement and enforcement policies are also related to it's use as a means of revenue generation.

I've always suspected that street cleaning was first and foremost a revenue maker for the city. If it was purely for reasons of cleanliness they could get away with every other week or once a month. Any area where they cut down on cleaning is probably just an area where they don't break even on tickets versus the cost it takes to clean there.

@jacobe

SoMA needs a good cleaning every night because otherwise it would unhealthy to live in, not because of street cleaning tickets. The city doesn't ticket you for revenue, that's what taxes, fees, and meters are for. The tickets are a penalty for breaking the law.

There are a couple small alleys in SoMA that don't get street cleaning, and they get really, really nasty: needles, dirty underwear, cotton swabs, and of course everyone's favorite: broken glass.

I lived on 47th at Cabrillo for years. The only benefit to weekly street cleaning was the removal of excess sand that had accumulated. Otherwise, the rest of the street was pretty much litter free.

Richmond district native here... every other week should be fine for most of the avenues, save thoroughfares like Geary and parts of Balboa & Clement. My old place at 34th & Cabrillo will be just fine with twice-a-month cleaning.

I've lived in D11 for almost two years now and I've always thought street cleaning every week was excessive. I would probably be more in favor of reducing it if I still had a car and had to worry about moving it every week, but now I just see it as a waste of money and energy.

As a resident of Ocean View I'm really looking forward to this. At present the small residential street I live on (even if it is the lead-up to BART) really doesn't need to be cleaned twice a week. It's a waste of city resources and a complete pain in the ass for me to have to keep moving my car.

There just isn't enough traffic along it to result in trash really piling up. I suspect that this is true of many areas on the west side as so many of them are residential.

In my East Coast side street in SOMA they clean the street EVERY night of the week. Alternating the sides every day.

I don't have a car, but it makes it difficult for those that do, having to move a vehicle even if it hasn't been used.

Maybe they can't reduce the street cleaning in my area, because they make too much money from the tickets that are issued!!!
