If the homeless want my money, they have to make me feel sorry for them. Appearing competent enough to draw little smiling faces (which I hate under any circumstances) on their cardboard boxes just irritate me.

Being old, looking/smelling mentally unbalanced/generally pathetic, will coax my cash.

Or they could have a dog. That ALWAYS gets my wallet out.

But a smiling box? NO. If a box is going to smile, it should not be smiling on a street corner.

Can anyone tell what the remainder of the sign reads? "I hate to lie but i only need ???" Either way, I agree with blue. Not good enough for my cash.

That guy was successful at scaring the crap out of us when my family was visiting last fall. He's the Bush Man of Union Square, and yes, the Bush Man has scared the crap out of me too.

hollyMmm, I think it says they need crack!

Compostion-wise, a big improvement over yesterday's homeless photo.

are those supposed to be caricatures of homeless people to collect the money while he is off panhandling elsewhere?

largo, THAT is brilliant.

Actually, the homeless guy got some h1b visa folks to sit for him under the box. That way, he can get 10x returns. Box is just there to discourage conversation and getting their accents discovered.

hollyMmm the rest of the sign says "$15.00 Thank You"

The homeless man is under the box on the right, you can see his foot hanging out.

The way the boxes work is the guy sits under the large box and opens and close both mouths.
He works the lady mouth on the left by sticking his right hand through both boxes.
When you pass and see both boxes moving/talking it's pretty cool.
This guy sat down and created something by himself to help himself.
I see a lot of homeless people on a daily basis and this guy is definately my favorite homeless person of the day.

Please tell me the banter between the two boxes was an homage to Wayland Flowers & Madame. That would amuse me.

Wow, I thought I was the only one who remembered Madame. Any mention of I make of her brings only a blank stare.

i see this guy get busted all the time.
