I thought Beth Spotwood's post was brilliant. I was snickering about "AIDS rape baby" all night. Now I just need to figure out how to work that term into my next conversation.
You're both right.
I would submit that a writer (particularly a blogger) may be both vacuous AND awesome, (see Warhol, Andy) and that the terms are not mutually exclusive.
"Fluff" is very much a quality of the oeuvre d'Spotswood. It's overt. Hell, there's even a plea to be taken trivially on her masthead. You can't get away with "AIDS rape baby" if you're solemn about it.

KatyG - Your incorrect assumption that the father of Spots' AIDS baby is a "big black guy" is not the result of skimming. It is the result of your being ignorant and racist and trying to use your little head to fill in the blanks.
Your incorrect assumption that Beth is vacuous is the result of your lacking a palate for writing that transcends the Daniel Steele novels to which you are accustomed. Go back to the Penninsula.

For years, I worked as a bartender for @ Network/McAfee Stadium during many, many Raider games, right above the black hole.
I can tell you right now that any assumption that Raider Fan X is of African-american decent does not ipso facto constitute racism.
Look around the stadium. The audience tends to reflect the city's demographics. Oakland is 38% black, its largest ethnic group --as most Bayareans are peripherally aware.
So uh, yeah, "Raider Fan = probably black" doesn't quite make her the GrandWizard. Although I will concede that in SF, odds are that Raider Fan X is hispanic.
... but it is true that all Raider fans have AIDS. So there's that.
