UPDATE: Big Sur's Fire Devastation Is Your Gain!

big-sur-fire-smoke.jpg

Turn that frown upside-down bourgeois staycationers (oy, that word). While Big Sur sears until it's golden brown, the coastal town has turned into somewhat of a ghost town. And now, according to 71Miles' John Vlahides, some of the area's nicest hotels and R&R spots have lower their prices to rates that signify clinical insanity. Check it:

The bad news is, the Basin Complex fire in Big Sur is still burning and only 3% contained. The good news is, no inns, restaurants or attractions have burned. If you’re willing to brave the eeriness of a town on high alert, it’s a stellar time to score a rock-bottom rate at Post Ranch Inn or Ventana Inn, which both remain open. The winds have shifted, blowing coastal fog inland, and the postcard-perfect viewshed has been 95% restored.

But book while you can. What with these rock-bottom prices, places are sure to fill up fast.

UPDATE: As of 2 p.m., the entire town of Big Sur has been totally evacuated. Alas.

That actually sounds amazing.

As of this afternoon, the Ventana Inn is under a mandatory evacuation order.

hence the excellent rate on a view-room!
