SFist Blotter

BERNAL HEIGHTS EXCELSIOR, SUNDAY: After three people were shot in broad daylight at Maynard and Congdon streets, two of the gunshot victims died. It seems the men were driving southbound on Congdon Street at 3:10 p.m. yesterday when they encountered another car going northbound on the same street. A suspect in the second car then fired, shot three and killed two, and fled. No arrests have been made.

Oh, and this brings the city's murder tally to 50 for 2008. Zero has changed from last year at this time. Thanks, Gavin. You too, Heather.

UPDATE: The third shooting victim has reportedly died at SF General.

MISSION, SUNDAY: A Man was brutally shot over on Guerrero and 24th streets "by a person who jumped out of a car and started shooting." The victim is currently in stable condition. It goes without saying, no arrest have been made.

See anything? Know anything? Because the Mayor's Office and the SFPD sure as hell doesn't. Call the anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444 with any info.

OAKLAND: Seven people were shot and killed in Oakland over the weekend.

The third excelsior shooting victim just died at the hospital.

That's a pretty loose definition of Bernal Heights.

I agree with Pancakebreakfast.

I think the area is called Silver Terrace, not BH.

That's the Excelsior District, where the 3 guys were killed, not Bernal Heights. Bernal Heights is north, across 280.

And I'll add (wish there was an edit feature) that Silver Terrace is about 20 blocks to the east of this.

Is there some word or phrase to describe the way we debate which neighborhood is where? I see this on SFGate as well. There will be an article about a shooting and pages of comments about how the neighborhood mentioned is not where it actually took place. Do we do this because we don't (or do depending on what is at question) want to believe certain things happen in our neighborhoods?

xyz123, I think the debates about neighborhoods are mostly caused by the fact that it's simply pretty confusing what some neighborhood boundaries are. Then add to the mix that there are certain neighborhoods and sub-neighborhoods that some people haven't ever even heard of, and it can make it all even more confusing. For example, I've always associated myself as living in Noe Valley. Some people however(and most maps), claim that I live in Eureka Valley or even the Castro though. As for the Excelsior/Mission Terrace/Bernal Heights thing, I know of some lifelong SF residents who don't know where Bernal Heights is, and don't even know that the Excelsior or Silver Terrace exist.
