Wildfire on San Bruno Mountain Creeps Toward South San Francisco

A wildfire on San Bruno Mountain may threaten some homes on the South side of the mountain along Sister Cities Blvd tonight. These shots, taken by a reader on Drake Avenue (across Hillside) at around 8:35 p.m., show the fire heading close to South SF as "numerous firetrucks rush[ed] to the scene along with several helicopters on hand to battle the flames from the air." The area is a new development of million dollar homes and are "in the line of fire."

According to the Gate, the five-alarm five has burned so burned 175 acres so far. It seems a few streets in Brisbane were evacuated earlier, "but the fire is now moving away from that area." Around 200 Brisbane residents are have been evacuated so far, and about 200 firefighters are on the scene.

Thanks to SFist reader Matt Kline and Flickr user Hep for (bravely) capturing the following images of the San Bruno Mountain blaze.

San Bruno mountain was (or is) a terrible location to have built those new houses and those totally out of place high-rise office buildings.

Most of the California fires happening this week were supposedly started by lightning, but since lightning isn't very common in this region (even during rainy season), I wonder how long it'll take investigators to figure out it was somebody's discarded cigarette that sparked the blaze?

My heart goes out to those whose homes are in danger.

I have to agree with MalcoveMagnesia, though--South City and Daly City have been overdeveloping San Bruno Mountain for about ten years now. It's sad that residents pay the price for a city's greed.

It's not unusual for fire to happen there either. It has 3 times since I moved here in 2000, that I know of, and I usually wouldn't know. I've just been driving 101 and seen it. This one seems extra big and with homes closer than ever before, scary.
