Dave Chappelle, Bygone CompUSA Spotted On Market Street

An SFist reader spotted comedian Dave Chappelle walking on Market Street the other day, interrupted his privacy, and snapped up the photo at left. (Thanks, Flickr user 3dollarbilly!) What he also caught was the now dead CompUSA store haunting and taunting us in the background.
Why, CompUSA? Why?
After years of adequate tech service, malodorous customers, and pointless and comprehensive backpack searches, you go on close your doors. Awful. For us non-Mac users, we now have to go to the Apple store or, worse, Walgreens to replace our dead mouse. And if we want a new keyboard? We must travel over to that creepy part of the Mission, just past Division Street, to Office Depot.
Where do you all recommend in downtown San Francisco for PC parts?

You can get ANYTHING, and I do mean ANYTHING, out front of the Carls Jr. by Civic Center.
Central Computers, on Howard between 4th and 5th, is-was-and-always-will-be the place to go.
How about the Office Depot on 3rd, near Market? Well, actually, I think of it as the Office Depot next to Dave's, but that says more about me than anything.
Central Computers, on Howard between 4th and 5th, is-was-and-always-will-be the place to go.
+1
Central Computer is great, been going for years.

i'm going there today. thanks, all!
It was scary down there -- in the bowels of CompUSA. I don't consider myself earthquake-paranoid but wow, every time I went to that store, I fully expected the Big One to strike as I fondled the iProducts.
I've run into Dave Chappelle a few times near Market & Geary. Does he have a place somewhere near there?
CompUSA was the place to buy a printer, and Central was the place to get the cable.
Central Computer rocks. It's a small, local business, but their prices are competitive with the big box stores, and the people that work there are smart and friendly. Five stars.
I've used Central Computer for years and didn't even know CompUSA had clsed. After getting utterly robbed by CompUSA I vowed never to go back. I am so happy to see those pirates die.
its hot today!
Oh, and in other Dave Chappelle-related news, a friend saw him at a Silence the Violence vigil in Oakland on Wednesday. She said he wasn't part of the program or anything, but he said a few words.
From http://www.insidebayarea.com/news/ci_9630154
"Standup comedian and actor Dave Chappelle attended the event. He said although he didn't know much about the vigil he was glad that one of his friends invited him to come along."
There's something weird happening in my brain when I read the words "Silence the Violence." I think it's because the words rhyme, so I'm expecting them to be spelled the same; and when I see that extra O in "violence" it makes me mentally pronounce it like, "silence the vee-OH-lints." And then when I try to correct myself, it turns into "SEE-oh-lints the VEE-oh-lints."
I ran into Dave Chapelle at the Metreon once. He was with a child (his child?)
Or his date?
CompUSA was a vile, horrid place and I did a dance of pure happiness when I saw they were going out of business.
Any place that wants to search my bag/presumptively treat me like a thief can kiss my ass. Which is what I always took great pleasure in telling them.
Has Dave been working out?
Central Computer has a sign up telling you to check your bag, but I never do and they've never yelled at me. It really takes a lot to get anyone in Central to pay you attention, I think you have to stab someone.
there was a rumor going around that central computer was like a front for some asian mafia or something? but whatever, it just adds to the mystique. i've found their customer service to be just fine, but they definitely aren't the type of place to hold your hand if you don't know what you want/need. and stuff like having them test a mobo/cpu combo to post before you take it home is just spiffy. A++++will buy from them again
"I'm rich bitch!" Except CompUSA is "broke son, broke!"
People actually go to brick-and-mortar stores to buy computer parts?!
How 'bout http://www.centralcomput... oh wait. nm.
In the United States, we have this thing called the "Constitution" that gives you "rights." It's worth a read, IMO.
You NEVER have to consent to a search unless you have explicitly signed away this right (as is the case with Costco, etc.)
Also: Central Computer for the win!
central computer rocks.
chapelle is always in sf, wonder if he has a pad.
Thanks for the civics lesson but the Constitution applies to the government, not to private entities. Since shopping at CompUSA was not something one did because of a goverment mandate, they can set whatever requirements they wish (with some significant exceptions, of course). Nice to see someone interested in their rights, but keep studying.
