I grew up in Kansas and lived there for far too long. Trust me, nothing you can do will even remotely phase Phelps. Counter-protests do nothing more than give him additional press coverage and plenty of people to hit with frivolous lawsuits. Ignoring him as a crazed nutjob is the only reasonable response. It's sort of like why the standard position is for respectable scientists to avoid even putting down intelligent design: by arguing against something crazy you give it perceived legitimacy.

God *Loves* gay marriage. He's a *little* mad at Contra Costa for voting for Prop 22 a few years ago, so he sent us a slight drought, but all we have to do is cut our sprinklers back 19%. But he's reserved his true fury for the Heartland, why else would He send all those tornados and floods only through the parts of the country that haven't approved gay marriage?

I agree with Largo01. Even the most hardcore religious nutjobs I know find this guy to be an embarrassment. The more he's associated with being anti-gay, the worse the religious right looks.

Don't worry. The fundies are facing particularly bad economic times. Having wrapped up their entire lives in Bush's economic miracle they've got mortgage payments they can't make, jobs that have disappeared with the housing crisis, trucks they can't afford to gas up, 19 kids and crappy heathcare. They simply don't have the cash to fight the gay no more.

I hope someone catches the show on videotape as a motivator to not change the Constitution to ban existing freedoms on account of this terrorist loon. Doesn't he protest our soliders' funerals too, leading some Republicans to make some new laws about protests at funerals? We'll need all the ammo we can get to fight the November proposition ... I'm sure the Catholic Church (despite the good intentions of the Catholics in our City and surrounding area) will ignore the starving, shelter seeking folks to some degree in order to spend millions to shove their religious beliefs down Californians' throats as if they're the Ayotollah in Iran or something .... the Catholic Church spent $1 million in Michigan, and that wasn't exactly a hard state to pass a gay marriage ban. All I have to say is, Jesus Christ!

A good reason to ignore Phelps is that one of the key ways the Church obtains its funding is by suing counter protestors who get a little to enthusiastic. By ignoring him and not giving him any targets to sue it's actually a way to dry up funding for Phelps and his clan.
