Newsom Expresses His Distaste for San Diego's Most Recent Stance On Queer Marriage

When did San Diego become so...meh?
After this month's historic ruling that will allow the gays to legally wed in the state of California, San Diego County Clerk Gregory Smith let it slip that he would "consider allowing clerks to bow out of processing such marriages if they had moral or religions objections." Which? He can't do.
And that's illegal, isn't it? That whole church/state overlap thing? Didn't we already go over this, that not performing a same-sex wedding might lead a government worker to lose their job?
Anyway, once Newsom heard about San Diego's latest stance on gay marriage, he waved his finger in the air, cocked his head back and forth, and shrieked:
If you don't want to provide a marriage certificate and you've got a job that does that, then you should think twice about why you got the job in the first place and maybe you should get a new job...[t]alk about a slippery slope, Mr. County Clerk down in San Diego.
Not very good for business, San Diego. Gay marriages = gay dollars.

And THAT'S why I happily moved away from San Diego 4 years ago. I love me the gays!
sounds like another lawsuit coming...
Ugh, I'm so sick of jesus freaks using god as an excuse to avoid doing their job. If you can't perform your job duties, for whatever reason, go work somewhere else.
I'm no fan of Newsom, but I'm with him 100% on this one.
Reminds me of the pharmacists who refuse to dispense the morning-after pill for "moral" reasons.
It's annoying when companies in the private sector coddle Jesus-freak employees like this, but it's a totally unacceptable for someone in public service to pull this passive-agressive BS.
I'm thinking of taking up Satanism just to piss off these right wing jeebus freakos. Anyone know where I can get a shiny black cape and some bright red horns? They SO hate the bright red horns!
perhaps the sf clerk can allow city staffers here to decline evangelicals a certificate for aesthetic reasons. "sorry pal, those epcot center flip-flops are simply butt ugly and the lady's hair looks like a stray cat brawled with a spool of fishing line. plus, you both smell like a vat of jalepeno poppers. no can do."
let's remember: not everyone who firmly believes in God, Jesus, or unicorns hates the gays and the idea of same-sex weddings.
although this Satanism does sound intriguing.
So, basically what Gregory Smith is saying is that it is OK for government employees to deny someone their civil rights, as long as said employee has religious issues with it. I suppose if one of their employees is in the KKK, they may assume that it is also OK to deny civil rights based on race.
essentially, yes. i can't imagine he will have his job for much longer, though.
Newsom is such a hero. Yeah right.
Santeria is easier.
IDK. Their job requirements have changed since they took the job. If I was in recovery or of a faith that looked down upon alcohol, like the LDS, and the store I was working at started selling booze, I'd be upset and want a transfer or something.
Maybe they can not give out marriage licenses based on faith reasons, but the state should make sure at least one person on staff is willing.
But then we'd be in the gay line/non-gay line drink fountain kinda area.
Crap.
last time i was in san diego, i a bro i was from san francisco, and he asked what it was like to live in "fag city" then high fived his friend.
above: i a bro=i told a bro
SD has always had a stick up its butt (er, so to speak) politically - they were one of the first to sue the state because of Prop. 215, and pretty much stated that they'd turn anyone attempting to practice their rights under the law to the feds.
Nice weather and cool attractions though...
If they can't perform their job duties, they should find another job. I'm tired of every single silly belief being accommodated to the detriment of the general public.
Unicorns told me not to work on Friday. My beliefs are being discriminated against because I'm at my desk. Bullshit.
San Diego has always been in a conservative mood, something that seems to come as a shock to people who normally don't pay attention to what happens down there.
phsargent, the only thing that's changed are the eligibility requirements related to one document associated with their job. The job requirements remain the same: Stand at this counter, take payment, examine documents, issue paperwork in a manner required by state law.
"Talk about a slippery slope, Mr. County Clerk down in San Diego."
Is Gavin studying rhetoric under Sgt. Joe Friday?
"last time i was in san diego, i a bro i was from san francisco, and he asked what it was like to live in "fag city" then high fived his friend."
This made me laugh out loud. I just adore stupid people except when they remind me they exist by like getting in my face and stuff. "Fag city", so clever. Haw haw!
Living in SF is a lot like living in Logan's Run. Not only is everyone here over the age of 30 seemingly taken out and shot, but we choose to isolate ourselves under our dome of pseudo-liberality to such a degree that we're just floored when things happen like, gee, San Diego turns out to be all conservative like. Folks, San Diego is a military town full of working class military types who grew up in square states. Of course it's conservative, these aren't the most politically or socially aware people we're talking about here. These are gawd fearing Christians who believe in good, old fashioned Amurrican values like treating women like chattel and killing "towel heads" who hate our "democracy" and "freedoms." It's hardly surprising that the county clerk would be suspicious of this gay agenda marriage dealey plot no doubt cooked up by communists and "the terror."
