Where Should Dogs Poop, Then?

Found somewhere on Church Street, does this sign mean your dog can't release his or her bowels here, or that you must use something to clean up said mess. Is this official-looking sign even enforceable?
Also, why can't pooches poop on these weeds? It's not like they're California poppies.

Um, because having the streets covered in dog shit is kind of unpleasant?
I think you have to respect a hand-painted, no-pooping sign, if only to pee on it.
I imagine the sign wouldn't be up if every dog owner who allowed their pooch to crap in the weeds cleaned up after their dog. And I'd probably be less likely to replant a rectangle of weeds full of hidden dog shit. But that's just me.
That looks like some screwed up pooping unicorn, not a dog.
I walk dogs often (not my own) and these kinds of signs (though not usually hand painted) are everywhere. If a dog I'm walking decides to bless a spot with a turd, it doesn't care about where signs are posted, its just going to go. Ever try to move a pooping Great Dane? It's not going to happen.
Simply, dog guardians/walkers just need to pick up the poo, in a bio-bag preferably, and dispose of it in a correct receptacle (not in other people's trash or recycling bins.)
I've noticed, empirically, that most (not all) of the people who let their dogs walk off leash are non-poop-picker-uppers. I guess if they disobey one law, disobeying another is easier.
Beautiful sign... for me to poop on!!!!

Duboce Park doesn't get its nickname "DogShit Park" for nothing.
Speaking of enforcement, does anyone know if these off-the-leash folks can be fined? I would love to hear details on enforcement, fines, city codes.
I've thought a lot about taking a human shit in the dog park to make my point, but something tells me that wouldn't quite solve the problem.
Shame on Poo!
Dog poop and off-leash ordinances are a total joke. Basically a few people with too much time on their hands and no spines complained enough that the city gave them their ordinance.
The people you see allowing their dogs to poop everywhere and walking them off leash are basically telling those folks "Fuck you and your silly ordinance. You're obviously too afraid to confront me or you would'nt have created some law to hide behind..."
ya'll
found this on flickr.
I've seen them all over pac heights, cow hollow and some parts of the eastern SoMa

Whoa, whoah. Please do not lump people who don't clean up after their dogs in with people who let their dogs be off leash.
The leash laws are ridiculous. I have a park two blocks from my home. I should buy a car, fill it with gas (let some kid die in Iraq, add to the parking issues), and drive all the way out to bfe so my dog can stretch its legs? Ridiculous.
Every afternoon, right after work, the dog people in my neighborhood gather in the park. The dogs play with each other, everyone is careful to make sure all dog shit is cleaned up, the dogs are under control, and it lasts about 30 minutes. It causes no problem and it fosters a sense of community. Everyone knows each other this way. People bring their kids and let them get their dog fix.
The cops told us, as long as no one complains, they aren't going to worry about it. Which is the way it should be. As long as people are responsible, live and let live.
Where should dogs poop then?
Somewhere else!
That single square foot has been asked to be left alone. (likely because a few people don't pick up after their own pet, it doesn't take many scofflaws for the shit to pile up.) Personally I like it when my dog shits into a storm grate. And if you live near there and have a dog, it's pretty easy to make sure your dog doesn't use that square, approach it with your dog the same way you would approach a pile of junky barf, with a tight leash.
There's a guy in my neighborhood who planted all kinds of pretty flowers around the base of his tree. For some reason, my dogs are obsessed with trying to pee on it.
It's pretty easy (and common courtesy) to just pull them away, though.
But pooping in a storm grate? How the heck did you train your dog to do that?
how about dog owners just let their dogs poop in front of their own houses? seems simple enough. i don't know much about dog digestion but considering that my building doesn't allow pets we still end up with a fresh pile out front at least once or twice a month, and we don't even have a nice garden or anything just cement.
even the folks who cleanup still don't always seem to manage to scrape all the stuff either, sometimes it's kind of wet and mushy leaving little nasty brown streaks that sit around until the next rain which is a long frickin time in the summer. your dog wants more fiber.
What andyc said. If you decide to own a dog, it's your responsibility and should be your sole burden. Let the dog shit in your own yard. Don't have a yard? Shouldn't have a pet that needs so much space to roam. And shit.
Give me a break.
