This Week in Le Rock: May 12 - 18

poproxx.jpgFirst off, we're sorry we missed last week's music offerings - Wallpaper, Eric Hutchinson and The Trucks - but we're back. A lot has happened in just one week. First off, New Kids on the Block debuted their newest single, "Summertime" with the announcement there's going to be a tour and new album. Frankly, from what we've heard, it's not that bad. Actually it's kinda good in a pop-ish, upbeat "summer" hit kind-of-way. Madonna also announced that she will be bringing her "Sticky and Sweet" tour to Oakland on November 1st. You better make sure you get your tickets fast!

Now, onto what's happening in the city this week: Tuesday night, U.K.'s most-adored shit-talking Brit, Kate Nash, will be back in the city to perform at the Fillmore. We definitely think the venue is too big for her style and personality but it will still be worth it to listen to her quirky lyrics and fun rhymes. Just remember not to stand next to any annoying drunk bitches - they'll ruin everything.

Wednesday, head over to the Independent and catch sOuth, another band from England. Their sound is definitely indie-rock but it's still fresh and not over-played. Check out their newest single, "Better Things". If you want some local music, then the party will be at Rickshaw Stop Amoeba with the hugely popular band, The Dodos. We have a feeling that show will be amazing. Update: Rickshaw Stop will be hosting another local favorite: Port O'Brien. They are super; we saw them open for Nada Surf and loved them!

Langhorne Slim will be performing their folk-ish soul music at The Independent on Thursday night. He just released his debut album at the end of last month and was recently on The Late Show with Dave Letterman.

Saturday night, it's time to party it up with Pop Roxx at the DNA Lounge. At eleven, The Frail - one of our favorite local bands - will be throwing down their dance grooves with their electrifying synth sounds and crazy beats. Don't miss this dance explosion! popscene's DJ's Omar and Aaron will be even there. Party starts at 9pm and wear blue - it's the color theme, yo!

I can't believe Spots hasn't blogged the NKTB release.

Who's Spots?

Beth Spotswood.

Ah yes, I knew I had come across that name before...

I miss your night by night list of what is happening at all live music venues of importance. For months I have been excited about the Dirtbombs show at the Independent this Friday. They are a garage band combination of the best sounds from Detroit, both the soulful Motown sound and the proto-punk ways of the Stooges and MC5.

Port O'Brien and Someone Still Loves you Boris Yelstin are playing at the Rickshaw on Weds.. unless the Dodos are a surprise guest? They'll be at amoeba earlier.. so it's entirely possible?

Yes, yes, yes. I just noticed that myself. I just updated the post! ;)

@xyz123: It will be coming back, I promise.
