It Really Makes You Think: UCB Celerates Nakba

In a continued effort to fetishize the "game of chess" that is Palestinian/Israeli relations, UC Berkeley students staged a harrowing--harrowing!--border checkpoint commemorating the anniversary of the Nakba (i.e., "Arabic for "Catastrophe," the Palestinian name for the founding of Israel in May of 1948").The fake security checkpoint happened on campus at Sather Gate yesterday.on May 7, 2008.

But in all seriousness: good job, kids. This almost makes us miss our days at old the ala mater. And it looks like you all had loads of fun.

Zombietime caught all the gaiety. Check him out for more images here.

Wow, that fat kid with an ill-fitting helmet and a toy-gun purchased at Walgreens makes me feel as if I was there.

Now if it was a checkpoint for Oaklanders you'd have my attention.

Well if they weren't constantly blowing up israelis there wouldn't be a need for any checkpoint at all.

ridiculous college students...

And once again, my "don't walk through Sproul, ever" policy has served me well.

It's not a very effective checkpoint if the rest of the student population can walk through Sather Gate unscathed.

Also, the last picture captures the view from the Berkeley College Republicans' table (it's always in this vicinity). Oddly enough, the guy sitting at the table is a fellow (camera-shy) Berkeley blogger, and you can find his take on the event here: http://beetlebeat.blogspot.com/2008/05/go-blow-yourself-up-or-something.html

I bet they don't have a bunch of crackheads there.
