Newsom Offers $250,000 Reward In Exchange For Terrell Rogers' Murderer(s)

Wow. Mayor Gavin Newsom is offering a whopping $250,000 bounty for the head of the person(s) who shot and killed Terrell Rogers in January. If you recall, Rogers, a father and anti-violence activist, was murdered just across the street from Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory, during his daughter's basketball game.
Now, Newsom wants an answer. And the get that answer he's offering up an unusually large reward. Nice. And strange. Why? Because just last year he publicly announced that reward money doesn't do shit insofar as nabbing criminals. Even SFPD spokesman Sgt. Neville Gittens said that "when we issue rewards like that, we do generally get calls and they are helpful."
Well, at least it seems like something is getting done.
Anyway, the press release offering treasures beyond your wildest dreams is as follows:
MAYOR NEWSOM ANNOUNCES $250,000 REWARD IN FATAL SHOOTING OF TERRELL ROGERSSan Francisco, CA – Today, Mayor Newsom announced a $250,000 reward for
information leading to the identification, apprehension and conviction of
the person(s) responsible for the death of Terrell Rogers that occurred on
January 12, 2008 in the parking lot across the street from the gymnasium of
Sacred Heart College Preparatory High School at 1055 Ellis Street in San
Francisco."The violence plaguing our streets will not stop without the help of every
resident of San Francisco," said Mayor Newsom. "This reward is one tool we
can use to urge anyone with information to come forward and cooperate with
law enforcement. Our neighborhoods deserve the justice that can only come
with solving this tragic crime."The homicide victim, Terrell Rogers, was approached by two suspects shortly
before 8:00 pm on January 12, 2008. The two suspects shot Mr. Rogers and
fled.Anyone with information is urged to contact Inspector Antonio L. Casillas
of Homicide Detail of the San Francisco Police Department at 415-553-1145,
or the San Francisco Police Department Confidential Tip Line at
415-575-4444.

I think a reward is a great idea, however it does beg the question, why was this persons life worth more than the dozens of other murder victims who's murderers were never found?.
the amount is typically increased when no one offers up any decent leads, i think. last year newsom raised the bar to $100,000, which didn't do too much.
maybe this amount will do the trick?
Daithi, because this guy was making a positive contribution to society. I hardly think it's a shock to anyone that some people's lives are deemed to be worth more than others.
What if four people offer information that leads to the arrest? Are we out a cool mil?
So the Mayor gets to decide who's life is worth more than others. I understand the concept, just seems like a slippery slope to me.
how much do you think he'd offer for dede, ruby rippey-tourk, and daly?
dede: $1 billion
ruby: $1 million
daly: $1
It's probably quite cost effective if compared to the SFPD's current success rate. If you divide the cost of SFPD murder investigations by the number of cases actually closed, I'm sure it's more than $250k.
This must be like one of those hole in one contests, where you win $1M dollars if you sink it. Guess some insurance company thought that it was less likely to have a conviction in San Francisco, than a hole in one at Harding Park and underwrote this reward. They might apprehend, but a conviction is just not going to happen.
