I have a completely unscientific theory about the cycles of drug abuse; one drug becomes unpopular about the time an entire generation sees what it does to their friends, but they don't have direct experience of another drug, and it can't be as bad, right? It's all very "Requiem for a Dream"; I still think of that scene between the son and the mother as being one of the most powerful condemnations of speed ever produced. The horror in the son's eyes as he realizes his mother is on speed is chilling.
