OK, we're cutting it close here, time-wise. But since it's happening at 4 p.m., it feels inappropriate to stick this SFist Tonight. You see, Mario Batali is appearing at Book Passage in the Ferry Building this afternoon. While he's no Joanne Weir--who can do no wrong-- he is one of the few Food Network regulars who has yet to become grating (i.e., Rachael Ray), vile (i.e., Bobby Flay), or deeply harrowing (i.e., Sandra Lee), and still manages to pick up a best chef of the year award here and there.
For more info on his appearance shilling his new tome, Italian Grill, go here for more details.
Also, while you're there, please advise him of the nearest Sak's for Men. Because this is unacceptable. Bobby Flay-ish unacceptable.

I shared a cab with Joanne Weir once, and she is indeed all that and some freshly deep-fried thin potato slices sprinkled with sea salt. I also appreciate your description of Sandra Lee as "harrowing."
that, rroseselavy, is the comment of the week. lovely.
I had this master plan to contact Mario, for whom I lust daily, and get myself invited to dinner. I just KNOW he's having some 7 hour booze-fest in the back room of a fine establishment tonight. What's one more, right? I'm a good chatter!
Turns out, it's kinda hard to get in touch with Mario. He has "people."
beth:
right? even local chefs have people. i tried to talk to one cook of slight fame in sf--who was in the kitchen at the time before the place opened!--and they said i had to talk to her PR reps. pft.
Was it Zoi from Top Chef? Her "people" is Jennifer, and she's tough to get past.
I've heard that if you are a large-breasted female it's not that hard to get past Mario's people. He'll brush them aside to try and get to know you better. The man can cook, but apparently he's kind of a skank.
