Breaking News: Rich Kids Could Get Sprayed With Bullets

sidrills.jpg

While you were a young whippersnapper and only having to deal with fire and earthquake drills, the youth of today have to practice massacre drills--Columbine-style massacre drills, that is. We blame Grand Theft Auto.

A local San Francisco school had one "all-too-real" simulation yesterday. The "bone-chilling authenticity," we're told, included "a 911 call to the city's emergency dispatch center from inside the school," a total of five SFPD officers at the scene, and theater students covered in ketchup.

The very special drill even merited an entire article in the Chronicle. Why? Because it happened at St. Ignatius College Preparatory School. Which is? The learning institute for wealthy offspring--well, insofar as it's private and Catholic, so it's a parents-have-to-be-able-to-afford-it kind of rich--whose lives are way more important than yours.

San Francisco Unified School District officials, it should be noted, declined to participate in the dramatic shooting-spree exercises. Probably because students at SFUSD have been practicing for such Virginia Tech-ish moments since the first grade.

Just five cops? Must have been a guy with a nerf dart gun.

or a Yale a cappella group.

Ketchup makes more sacrifices than anyone gives it credit for.

Well of course the rich kids are more likely to get shot up. Ever heard of the DeVry Massacre? Me neither.

"Bone-chilling authenticity"? Give me a big fat fucking break. Anybody screaming with fear and pain while their lifesblood pools and clots around them? Anybody crying and puking with fear? Fucking rag, and fucking stupid reportage.

come on! SFUSD never does that kind of stuff! I happen to know because I'm currently in the system!

Cherries.

Hey guys,
Love the blog, but as a graduate of the SFUSD, and having gone through Saint Ignatius on financial aid, I felt obliged to respond to your post.

Here's a breakdown of the annual tuitions at San Francisco high schools (from their websites, all fees included, natch):
The Bay School - $32,400
The Urban School - $29,300
Lick Wilmerding High School - $28,980
San Francisco University High School - $28,725
Stuart Hall High School - $27,800
International High School - $27,670
The Drew School - $27,000
Jewish Community High School - $25,900
San Francisco Waldorf School - $24,700
Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep - $14,850
Saint Ignatius Prep - $13,950
Lowell - FREE

Yes, I agree this event was absurd, but I think that your socio-economic generalization of the school's student demographic is kinda off. Most of the kids I knew came from families that were solidly working class, and if it wasn't for the sizable financial aid the school (as well as all other Archbishop schools) gave out, most of us would have gone to Lowell or Wash (which offer equally good education opportunities).

Ketchup Abuse !!!!!!!!!
need I say it again Ketchup Abuse !!!!!!!!!!

Rick kids, at SI?? Hardly.

Er, that should read ricH. Sorry, my rage blinded me for a second.

the tone of this article is stupid. bitter much?

Yeah, as a San Francisco Catholic school survivor, I can attest that, while the income level trended upwards, it wasn't the place the hoity toity sent their kids. And there was a sizable percentage of students who were there on scholarship or financial aid. The school I went to very closely mimicked the demographics of the city as a whole. Or at least tried.

A lot of people simply went to Catholic schools because they offered a good education and their parents also went to Catholic school in the 50's/60's/70's.

My parents worked to the bone and sacrificed yearly vacations and brand new cars, so me and my siblings could do the Catholic school thang.

@ EclipseTuliphead,

of course i'm bitter. i would've killed to have gone to a place like S.I.

you think i ENJOYED public schooling?

i also went to public school. my best friend went to an expensive (non-Catholic) private school. i had the opportunity to go to a private (Catholic) school and i turned it down (and my family was not rich). i don't feel like i missed anything and i don't feel like those families are more important than me. whatever, public school didn't seem all that bad to me. maybe i'm just old.

it seems kinda sad to carry this bitterness around with you still...is your life today really that much worse for not having gone to a Catholic college prep? haven't you been able to move on and be successful regardless? if so, then what does it matter? if not, is that really the fault of a public school?
