Oh Snap! SFBG Defies Chris Daly, Endorses Leno

mark%20leno%20sfbg.jpg

After much hair-pulling, open letters, and Cathy-trying-on-a-bikini hysterics, SF Bay Guardian decided to endorse Mark Leno in the Third Senate District race. This goes against SF Supervisor Chris Daly's expresses wishes that the Guardian endorse Carole Migden.

SFBG breaks it down in length in this week's issue, but here's a snippet of their pro-Leno rationalizing:

While Leno is too close to Newsom, we will note that Migden is far too close to Gap founder and Republican leader Don Fisher, one of the most evil players in local politics. She proudly pushed to put Fisher — who supports privatizing public schools — on the state Board of Education.

A prominent local progressive, who we won't identify by name, called us several months ago to ask how were going to come down in this race, and when we confessed indecision, he said: "You know, I really want to support Carole. But she makes it so hard."

With Mayor Gaving Newsom and the "locally-owned" alt weekly endorsing le Leno, it looks like the election is his to lose at this point.

Agree? Disagree? Should politicians ever again try telling publications what to do via an open letter on their personal site? (Hint: no) Can we get a "o hai!" from Joe Nation supporters out there, if any?

Daly is one world-class mean-spirited retard.

After all, he's the guy who blasted the City for altering the torch route, having zero consideration for the safety of A.) the torch bearers, and B.) innocent bystanders from the shenanigans of the various protesters.

Congratulations, District 6 voters, you are represented by an evil tool.

I'm no fan of newsom (to put it mildly), but no one who cozies up to the Fishers gets my vote, for myriad reasons.

"o hai!" Brock! I couldn't possibly support either Leno or Migden, both of whom I find completely intolerable, so I guess I'll waste my vote and give it to Nation by default, even though I know nothing about him.

To add to today's list - read Nation's website, figger out who and what he is...

in a pinch, the gap does have nice separates. i'm just saying is all.

What bluecanary said. It's tough but fair.

Brock - political and social consciousness, you may want to consider cultivating these some day...

While I strongly disagree with Chris Daly on this particular race, calling him a "mean-spirited retard" is uncalled for. Are you seriously going to blame Daly for the Olympic torch boondoggle?? Gavin Newsom screwed that one up big-time, and deserves all the blame coming his way.

As a District 6 resident, I like having Chris Daly representing me.

RE: Joe Nation, the guy is in the pocket of health insurance companies (look at his campaign contributions) and landlords (where does he stand on rent conntrol, because nobody knows.) And while he talks a good game about being green, his "climate change" consulting gig is for Coca-Cola -- which has an atrocious on the environment.

Whatever you do in this race, don't vote for Joe Nation. I have my problems with Carole Migden and it's why I support Leno, but I don't want Joe Nation in the State Senate representing me.

The utter disregard for ethics laws kinda irks me. Funny the SFBG doesn't mention her extremely high staff turnover rate...

Nation will win because people are sick of the Leno-Migden bitch slap poison fest, and will vote for someone else.

Where exactly in Marin does Nation live?

Joe Nation doesn't live in Marin anymore -- he moved to Sonoma.

@ The Angry Young Man,

your pseudo altruism and frustration is an inspiration to us all.

Good for SFBG. there's a big reason why they didn't go with Migden - she's BATSHIT CRAZY! Someone give her some more drugs and tell her to take a drive again.

That never stopped anyone else in SF politics...

Is this the theme of Showgirls or what?

What's this about Olympic torch what not? I had all but forgotten about the Olympic torch run through San Francisco. THANK GOD it isn't still on my mind - if it were, that would be an indication that the Mayor and the Police Chief made the wrong move and sent the flame into the powder keg of pro-China and pro-Tibet/pro-Darfur/pro-Freedom folks that would've surely led to people getting hurt in San Francisco.

Anybody who thinks that the decision to avoid people getting hurt by moving the route was a bad one is a mean-spirited retard... and a jackass I might add. Hee haw.

I can't stand any further torch-mess finger pointing. Chairman Mao is the one to blame for the torch mess, period.

Well, the Olympic torch boondoggle had a human cost to it that outlived that silly charade: http://www.beyondchron.org/news/index.php?itemid=5554

You know what I really want to see? I want some enterprising blogger to create a YouTube video that includes the following:

(1) Footage of that fateful day, with protesters marching and the Olympic torch changing route all the time. Maybe even a map at one point showing where the torch ended up going

(2) Run that video in fast-forward

(3) Have the Benny Hill theme song played in the background.

That would be hi-larious!!

Good god, here we go again. Paul Hogarth spouting off about how great these so-called "progressives" are, and how he supports Chris Daly.

What a joke, a complete and utter joke.

Oh, and calling Chris Daly a "mean-spirited retard" is being way too kind. That man has absolutely no business being in public office.

Thank god the demographics of this city are changing and people like him won't have the opportunity to mess things up so badly.

"Thank god the demographics of this city are changing and people like him won't have the opportunity to mess things up so badly."

Hear, hear! Sometimes you have to destroy a place in order to save it. Just ask Hillary Clinton! I look forward to nothing but rich entitled people taking over the city, replacing the few scraps of remaining character left here with big box luxury brands, and then abandoning it in droves when the service industries they rely upon to do things like, uh, I dunno, clean their clothes, make their stupid Euro-coffees, and pick up their garbage cans full of out of fashion Wilkes Bashford cast offs, collapse entirely from lack of a local labor pool due to the ridiculously overinflated cost of living in the surrounding metropolitan area. Only when the city has been reduced to flame engulfed wreckage, like a scene out of an anti-Atlas Shrugged, will we have learned our lesson - capitalism really does need poor people!

it's not like the BG does reporting anymore or break any news that I can't get anywhere else, they should just become an opinion paper for the left to talk to themselves and worship at the altar of Gonzalez, et al, and sprinkle magic unicorn turds that bloom into rainbows because they're just so perfect and better than everyone else.

beats doing real work, anyway.

as for the state senate race - who cares? no matter who wins they'll all vote pretty much the same.

Hey Greg I just broke lazer bass -- that's news! I mean, it's not a review of the new Michael Bolton like you were probably hoping ... but there's always his next Oracle conference to look forward to. I'll get you a press pass.

God, I've loathed the SFBG for so long now. It pains, pains, pains me that their endorsement swung my vote to Leno.

Carole, baby, you had a good run. No hard feelings? Call me?

Fuck. This sucks.

@TAYM, what meds do you keep forgetting to take?

Anytime I see that familiar parrot, I know the post will be pure gold. AYM never disappoints.

Daithi -

Did you know that only 20% of Americans comprehend irony?

Haven't politicians been telling the publications what to do for years now ? I've probably just seen to much TV and even watched as a story was reported one way on the news in the morning and by mid-morning already putting a different spin on it for political reasons. Sheest, back in my early 20's I would have never guessed I would grow up to be as cynical as I have become.

Leave Chris Daly alone! *cries*

/goes back to sniffing his own farts.

shit, greg dewar, you're on a campaign to dismiss the work of guardian reporters as brainless pamphleteering with no real effort involved. you wrote the same thing about us over at calitics. disagree with the guardian's editorial viewpoints. god knows there's no shortage of people who loathe the paper. but again for the record, newspapers aren't monolithic. here's the response to dewar that went up at calitics:

"greg, i don't normally respond to these sorts of things, but when you work long hours, it's a little disappointing to see someone deride your pieces as mere opinionated missives rather than stories that required a helluva lot of reporting. the guardian's editorial opinions emanating from the closely watched endorsements and bruce bruggman's well-known persona can't always overshadow a lot of work that us grunts do week-to-week. drop by my desk sometime and peek over my shoulder. the endless public records battles required to leverage even seemingly simple info from a local gov agency would be enough to amuse you."

GW it's good to see you spend so much time responding to my comments on blogs (here and calitics! wow !). Clearly you have so much time on your hands you feel the need to respond to what in your mind must clearly be out-of-left-field nonsense. If what I was saying was really BS and you were doing such a bang up job you would not feel the need to respond beyond "Um, wrong, dude" and let your work speak for itself.

The fact is the Guardian hasn't broken any big new news stories, the kind that really rock the city, in a long time. I've been reading the Guardian for far longer than most people have even lived in the City, and used to be a big fan, but find the paper now to be mostly stuff I can find somewhere else, better, and faster.

Sucks to be you. I've tried to offer constructive criticism on my political blog but got the FU. So now I publish nastier comments which get you and your bosses riled up more. See what happens when you reward bad behavior?

PS: Also, people rip on me far more than they rip on you, m'kay?

you're right, greg. i had the miley cyrus vf photos before they went public, but i hesitated. mistake. reasoned patience always is.

those photos are gorked.

Totally off topic but Leno could really use a Lifestyle Lift, the minor one-hour cosmetic procedure with major results. Of course, had a picture of Midgen been put there I'd have written the same thing.

I think Joe Nation has already had one, so he's getting my vote.

Update: A Dream Team of SF progressives (count 'em: BILL BARNES, CHRIS DALY, MICHAEL GOLDSTEIN, ROBERT HAALAND, JOE JULIAN, ERIC MAR, RAFAEL MANDELMAN, ERIC QUEZADA, AND DEBRA WALKER) has a letter slamming the Guardian's bow to electoral reality.
