SFIFF: 1000 Journals

one_thousand_journals.jpgPsst! Anyone out there holding onto one of the sacred 1000 journals? If so, add to it already and pass it on! Or send it back to Someguy. Inquiring minds across the world want to see these 1000 journals!

SF Int'l Film Fest's screening of 1000 Journals at Kabuki on Saturday was very warmly received by a large audience, and questions abounded at the Q&A with filmmaker Andrea Kreuzhage and Someguy, the creator of The 1000 Journals Project.

In the summer of 2000, San Francisco artist Someguy sent one thousand journals out into the world. The journals are being filled as we speak--with drawings, collages, and musings by people from all walks of life and passed on to friends, left in random spots/cities, or relayed through the Internet and the mail. The first journal was sent back full to Someguy in September 2003, and Andrea Kreuzhage decided to find out what happened to the other 999.

More after the jump!

There are two more screenings of the film during the festival at Sundance Kabuki, tonight at 9 p.m. and Thursday, May 1 at 3:15 p.m.

In the film, we encounter people across the globe, from Pennsylvania to Canada, Croatia, Australia, and Singapore. The journals witnessed many trials and tribulations of their beholders--9/11, hurricanes, and writer's block. One big theme throughout the film is the collective guilt for holding onto a journal for too long and being pestered by the next person in line on the project's website. There is also a great amount of wondering about what has become of certain journals that seem to have dropped off the face of the Earth, especially Journals 114 and 194.

Someguy has received a few journals so far, and he intends to keep them all circulating until there are no more white spots in the pages. All the slots for the original 1000 journals are filled. Fortunately, due to the overwhelming popularity of the project, 1001 Journals has been launched, a sister project where users launch and facilitate their own journals. We're launching an SFist journal, so sign up for a slot in line!

Someguy has published a collection of the 250 best entries in The 1000 Journals Project, through Chronicle Books. Update: There was talk of exhibiting the show at the MoMa and Yerba Buena for while, but finding a way to keep the journals out in the open for people to add to them at the show wasn't conducive to the museum set-up.
