brock, i'm disgusted by your blatant disregard for and prejudice against sharks. it's not like they chose to be carnivorous hunters, you know. there are so many things in this world, and people and stuff who are very sensitive, and shouldn't be made fun of. they might feel bad, and cry. as a blogger, you should be ashamed of yourself. i hope this helps.

Ack, my statistics are bad, but suffice it to say that shark fatalities in California (or elsewhere) are extremely rare. More people die of bee stings, dog bites, or lightning strikes. I'm sure I'll be looking for the "man in the grey suit" if I paddle out tomorrow though...

Sadly, there's no way of being entirely safe in the water. (And yes, I'm sympathetic since I surf in these waters -- also known as the Red Triangle.) There's really no way to know if they are in the water or not until one is spotted, and you will never know that they aren't there. That said, shark attacks are extremely rare; this is the fourth fatality since 1994. There are far more in Florida, South Africa and Australia. And, as we all know, Bay Area public transportation kills more people than sharks do.
