Great White Shark Kills Triathlete at San Diego Beach

solana beach shark

Since San Diego is the Bay Area's quiet sister down south, and seeing as how our coastline has seen its fair share of large fish attacks, we thought we should mention what happened today. Dave Martin, 66, a retired veterinarian (ironically) and a member of a triathlon club was killed by a great white shark in Solana Beach, 150 yards offshore.

Ranging anywhere from 12 feet to 17 feet long, the shark went after Martin a little after 7 a.m. while he and fellow athletes were training. According to the Gate, witnesses "saw him come up out of the water, scream 'shark,' flail his arms and go back under. Fellow club members dragged him back to shore, but due to the "single bite across both of [his] legs," he bled to death before he could reach a hospital.

Stay safe in the water, people.

Oh my god. That's just awful, awful.

In the language of Great Whites, the sound that is most similar to the shark-phrase "Come and get it" is the English word "Shark!".

Be safe out there.

Sadly, there's no way of being entirely safe in the water. (And yes, I'm sympathetic since I surf in these waters -- also known as the Red Triangle.)

There's really no way to know if they are in the water or not until one is spotted, and you will never know that they aren't there.

That said, shark attacks are extremely rare; this is the fourth fatality since 1994. There are far more in Florida, South Africa and Australia.

And, as we all know, Bay Area public transportation kills more people than sharks do.

Ack, my statistics are bad, but suffice it to say that shark fatalities in California (or elsewhere) are extremely rare. More people die of bee stings, dog bites, or lightning strikes.

I'm sure I'll be looking for the "man in the grey suit" if I paddle out tomorrow though...

I hope they don't go around killing sharks now.
2 wrongs don't make a right.

They're a bunch of shark terrorists is what they are.

omg. I just finished Jaws before turning my computer on to see this story. Coincidence? Maybe.

@rubylovesnorman --

You caused it.

brock, i'm disgusted by your blatant disregard for and prejudice against sharks. it's not like they chose to be carnivorous hunters, you know.

there are so many things in this world, and people and stuff who are very sensitive, and shouldn't be made fun of. they might feel bad, and cry.

as a blogger, you should be ashamed of yourself.

i hope this helps.

omg, humbert, you're right! how awful...

Godspeed, Dave Martin.

Wow. Just...wow. D:
