I gotta say. I went to UCSC for 4 years, and as a non-stoner 4/20 was pretty awful. Drum circles everywhere. Some Sasquatch looking woods-dweller stole all the soap in the dorm bathroom and threw it away - including my soap. The overwhelming wet sock reek of kind buds. Stoned ultimate Frisbee players running into plate glass windows like sickly bats. While this wasn't so different from much of the year, 4/20 just rubbed it in. Lastly, UCSC has a chronic fear of: 1) It's image as a hippie school - has this gotten worse of late, I think so. 2) A revival of the 80's 'End of the World Party' at Porter, which apparently started out nice, but got way outta hand and soon became like Castro Halloween - a violent crazy bridge and tunnel nightmare. Perhaps the same has happened with UCSC's 4/20 celebration, bus loads of wild-eyed goons and such looking for fights and free weed? Frankly awesome for UCSC, pot is not a sacrament - now Whiskey is a sacrament, but I digress.

its not just ucsc, other schools around the country notorious for their stoner crowds have had to fight stricter implementations of control on 4-20. i dont know if its that student bodies are getting more "in your face" about the illegal activity, or if there is something coming from the government saying "we need to reevaluate where our monies go. hence we are going to try and cut funding to whatever schools aren't complying with our rules." as someone who sits on a senate of a college with a large 420 friendly history i have to say its ironic that our students continually protest security for "parenting" them when it comes to alcohol and other substance control issues during events and parties on campus, yet they protest when the school states that it does not want to "parentally protect" them from the local cops who would gladly enforce federal drug laws.

As a slug alumni, I'm appalled. I also doubt it will deter any students from getting hella stoned, but the lockdown attitude will probably induce a lot of paranoia. I knew this shit would happen once they got rid of narrative evals....
