@BlueCanary - Nah. I've seen people more stable than this group get caught deep in drugs and lose everything(to meth heh). I'm not saying everyone here is a mortgage payment away from being a hobo, but I'm guessing there's a few of us who've spent time on the street, and a few of us who wouldn't or couldn't get help from friends or family if we needed it. You might not be close to this right now, BlueCanary, but you could be in five, ten years if you start popping H, or get in an accident that screws up your hippocampus, etc. Shit happens. It did to them.

And at the end of the day, if these people want off the streets, they and only they, can take the steps necessary to get off them. Nothing we can do will get them off the streets if they don't want to be off them. Hey, Blue Canary, does that include the mentally ill folks who are so far gone into their own personal psychotic hells that they can't even tell the difference between being on and off the streets? I used to live on Nob Hill and remember a homeless woman who wandered about the hill clad in nothing but a ratty red blanket and paper lunch bags for shoes. She slept in doorways, never begged for change, just trudged back and forth, day in, day out. You just had to look the woman in the eye to see she wasn't home anymore. I wouldn't be surprised if she was among the many pieces of human garbage we allow to die in the streets of our superior, progressive city on a regular basis. Of course, who cares about them when Danielle Steele is being celebrated for spending 4 million American dollars on shoes at Barney's? At the end of the day, our precious San Francisco values are no different than those of Amurrica as a whole, only snottier. I digress. Not all the homeless are drunken, drug addled bums. A lot simply can't care for themselves and have no family or support networks to help them get to a place where they may be able to. At the end of the day, it's a very complex problem with limited solutions.

i had a conversation with this man yesterday at about 7:20 pm, while waiting for the 21. (yes, he was in the same spot) he asked where i was going, and if i needed directions. i can honestly say that he was one of the nicest people i've ever met in this city.

I had a good laugh at some of these comments, but to Orangedrink, I must say, no, most of us are not "so close to being this." Which brings us to the problem. I hear everyone ranting about how the various mayors don't have the "balls" to "fix the problem." And how would you fix that problem? You have people on the streets for so many different reasons, how can you provide just one fix? And at the end of the day, if these people want off the streets, they and only they, can take the steps necessary to get off them. Nothing we can do will get them off the streets if they don't want to be off them.

The last time one of these was stranded up the delta, they had teams and teams of biologists making sure it didn't get beached. Sadly, the funding has since been cut.

On a serious note, this is where we are as a society. It's only so funny because it is so incredibly sad. How many times have you seen a person passed out, dead or damn near it baking on the sidewalk and kept walking by? How many more years will we tolerate inaction by our city "leaders" who refuse to do anything about the insane, drunk and drug addled cases who have landed or been sent here? How many more useless posers like Gavin Newsom, Chris Daly, Tom Ammiano, Willie Brown and the list goes on and on will be elected before somebody decides that enough is enough? Who has the balls to actually fix the problem? Nobody currently in office or it would have been fixed. Kick out the mayor, the entire board of supervisors and the chief of police. Clean the entire slate and let's start over. This crew can't wipe their ass properly, let alone run a city. They have already proven as much.
